I am considering picking up some Korean and I was wondering if there is any difference in Korean spoken in North Korea and Korean spoken in the south? I once read Kim Il-Sung discouraged the use of hanja and North Korea dropped them altogether at one point but from what I know they were later introduced? Is that true?

That's pretty strange, OP. I just started learning Korean because Hangul is the coolest alphabet I've ever seen.
Anyway I think they're reasonably similar.

There's many differences, I've lived my whole life in 전라남, and I still speak with an accent described as "northern". There's many differences between words and grammar.

Since North Korea is the Best Korea, they got rid of ancient foreign relics unsuitable for their language.
