The point being that the current English spelling system, paradoxically enough, reflects all of the variations of English pronunciation much better than any strictly phonetic system ever could. Despite appearing irregular, English spelling is actually quite regular once you've learnt all the rules. So, I endorse >>1's approach.

frankly i am not used to such a point of view. any time when we (russians) try to transliterate english with cyrillic almost everybody of us try to transliterate the pronunciation. in russian almost every word is written as it is spoken so to read something that is sounded in another way then it was written (like that one in >>1) is quite odd...
