chinese writing

hello,

i am studying japanese and just out of curiosity i have a couple of questions about chinese. oh of course i could just read it on teh wikipedia i guess but that would be too simple.

in my opinion the hardest part about the japanese writing system isnt even the kanji on their own but rather the thousands of compounds that you need to memorize. i heard every day chinese uses more hanzi than japanese, so how does that work? do they also combine more or less arbitrary characters to form new words as is done in japanese? i know that chinese characters usually only have 1 pronounciation so that should make it alot easier in that regard, but can you also guess the meaning of a compound word in chinese just by looking and combining the meaning of each individual character making up the compound or do you have to memorize pretty much every compound just as you have in japanese?

Chinese compounds work just the same way as Japanese, the only difference is that they normally use other compounds thanks to the structure of the language.

I don't get this part. You can guess the meaning of - let's say - 80 % of all compounds both in Chinese and Japanese. There isn't any difference.

Japanese pronunciation and reading is the main difference. Chinese don't have kana, either. I had a Chinese friend who studied Japanese with me in high school. He aced everything to do with kanji-English, but was hopeless at everything else.

I have a few Chinese friends who completely don't understand how to write words according to their pronunciation. It's something entirely new for them.

Well, let's assume you never heard the English word "onomatopoeia" before, and you heard it just once. Chances are, you wouldn't be able to spell it very good the first time.

I don't see how any language is different in that aspect, except for the possible exception of Finnish.

I'm sure they could write the pinyin of it though. 

A comparable issue is if you said "to" in English, and asked someone to spell it, they wouldn't know how to write "too", "two", "to", etc.
