South Korea wont hire you unless you have a degree. Nor will Japan, but they will let you tutor small children. However nether of these countries, especially Japan, need more foreign teachers. Also OP asked about interpreters.

Bump for answers.
I am interested in Interpretation and translation as a job

Why shitty? low pay? Damn this is like the only thing im really interested in studying

Low pay in general. Other reasons vary depending on your language pairs, directions and fields (If you translate/interpret Spanish into French, your language pair/direction is Sp -> Fr).

As for fields, every translator/interpreter is required to have deep knowledge/understanding of your field of expertise. Think what would happen if you only have amateurish knowledge of chemistry and laws and translate legal documents between two international chemical companies. If you're a translator would-be, you shouldn't be on /lang/; native fluency in multiple languages is taken for granted. What you need is an expertise in a specific area (in at least two languages).

>Damn this is like the only thing im really interested in studying
This is a huge problem. If you're thinking of becoming an interpreter or a translator in a field where a higher degree like MS/Ph.D isn't required, don't expect too much. Most likely pay is too shitty to tolerate.

High tier: Multilingual Ph.D who failed to get a job in his expertise (e.g., then professor wanna-be and now editor of foreign editions of prestigious scientific journals)
Mid tier: Multilingual grad school dropout (e.g., famous novel translator, in-house translator/interpreter of a huge international company)
Low tier: Multilingual college graduate (e.g., freelance simultaneous interpreter)
Shit tier: Anyone who needs to learn 'languages' he is to translate/interpret (the majority falls into this tier though.)

Depends on what sort of job you get, and how much in demand "your language" is.

A friend of mine makes $160 (!) an hour as a Russian interpreter for the Norwegian police. He gets called in every other week or so, though.

What's his other job? Working in 7/11?

I can charge $70/hour(Aus) to a company that deals with Chinese clients. Even if I'm not in high demand, I only need to work 3 - 4 days a week.

No seriously, what is his other job?

He's a student, and works part time as a cashier in some mall a couple of days a week.

I'm a comp. eng. student and work part-time as translator for japanese->german (mostly manga work). The money is alright, but if it's money you are after I'm sure you can find better work in that respect. Also considering it takes about 5 years or so of constant learning before you can work a job like this, you are probably better off doing something else.

how much do you make in a month?

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-09 20:42

D: well shit...
I'm not good at anything else.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-10 18:57

my python, lisp and scheme interpeters make nothing

it's a fucking interpreter, why should I pay anything, and even if I wanted to I can't

this is a retarded thread

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-10 20:55

>>22
so you don't think interpreters earn their pay?

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-10 21:12

>>23
they're useful, but you don't pay everything useful - and as I said, how're you gonna do it?

also, if I did that, I'd have to pay my compiler more

and I guess this stupid pun/joke is exhausted now

work as a private contractor. better money.
If you can only find shitty jobs as an interpreter then you aren't looking hard enough

I work as a web server and PHP interpreter for a fortune 500 company and I can assure you I make piles of money. It's a very competitive market though, so you have to be pretty talented and knowledgeable in a field other than languages. I myself used to be an architecture student, and therefore speak the machine language of 12 different architectures.

Don't change these.
