Learning the IPA

Name: Anonymous 2009-01-08 15:46

Hi, I figure this is the best place for this post.  I am a budding linguist, and I'm taking my first Introductory course this quarter at my university.  It's interesting and easy enough, but memorizing the different pronunciations of the IPA symbols as well as familiarizing myself with different terms such as "alveolar" and their corresponding meanings is difficult for me.  I was wondering if anyone had any low-level resources for new Linguists, or maybe online references that would prove helpful both in memorizing these things and perhaps helping myself further? Thanks!

Learn Greek and Cyrillic alphabets. It will make learning IPA symbols and corresponding.pronunciation much easier.

just practice IPA. pick words and, with a chart, right them down. keep doing it, and you'll get great really quickly.

for the terms, just make a flash card. on one side write the word, on the other write some of the related phonemes, maybe draw a rough diagram of the shape of the mouth from the side if you are arty too. work through them both ways, i.e. word to phonemes and vice versa.
