Any idea why they say "Merci" for "thank you" (which is actually French for thanks)? Although maybe 1/3 of the time, they'll use "Danke", German for thanks...

In Belgian Dutch we also say "merci" often instead of "dank u/bedankt".

The japanese sometimes say "sankyu" for thank you in a familiar context, instead of arigatou etc.
