I'm going to learn Mandarin Chinese. Does anyone think they can help me out by pointing to a place where I can start studying?

Try the FSI courses. I don't have any links for you, (sorry! tried my hardest) but there is a site out there with the text and audio synced completely. There are LOTS of drills but they're very effective. Be sure to have a notepad or lots of paper on hand!

Be warned, FSI courses don't use chinese characters. Only pinyin.

Also the Wiki lessons seem a good start.

It's really fucking hard.  Take a class if you can, otherwise start building up a mountain of self discipline...
