The original Lingua Franca did have its place, otherwise it wouldn't have developed.
And personally, I think it would be a good idea to teach a constructed language like Ido or so in all EU countries, which could be used as a starting point to learn the natural languages it borrows vocabulary from, as the language of the European internet and for official stuff.
But making a language that only caters to romance language speakers, in this day and age? I agree, pretty much pointless.
