Verb query

Trying to build up my strength in German, so I'm reading some fairy tales.

"Vor einem großen Walde wohnte ein armer Holzhacker mit seiner Frau und seinen zwei Kindern; das Bübchen hieß Hänsel und das Mädchen Gretel. Er hatte wenig zu beißen und zu brechen, und einmal, als große Teuerung ins Land kam, konnte er das tägliche Brot nicht mehr schaffen."

What do "beißen" and "brechen" mean in this context? I can imagine beißen meaning "to eat" but not sure about brechen.

Nevermind, I forgot the site I was on had translations, seems to just say "bite" and "break" but that wording just seemed a little odd in english.

"etwas zu beißen" means food in general. This expression is still being used today.
"etwas zu brechen" would refer specifically to bread, I guess. Never heard this being used in modern German.
