Being a native English speaker will help lots.
Being American won't.

Name: ImmaInTehDark 2007-11-02 19:20

What does American have to do with it?

Name: Anonymous 2007-11-02 19:44

Being a native English speaker will help you because they're both West-Germanic languages that share a lot of similarities.

Being American will be an obstacle, because it means you're essentially dumb.

Dutch is a painfully difficult language to learn. Give up now.

Your article is the wrong gender. Either that or you fail at punctuation.

Compared to German, Dutch is much easier to learn (because Dutch doest have the Akkusativ, Nominatif and that moffenshit anymore). But there are some really important differences between Dutch and English verbs. Your pronounciation is also very important.

German has a slightly more complex standard grammar in that particular case, but Dutch is made of exceptions. Dutch may not officially have grammatical cases and subjunctive moods and whatnot anymore, but in practice, there are countless idioms that still use them that any learner of Dutch is going to have to master.
Any language seems easy to a native speaker, but Dutch is a pain in the ass to learn, and nearly impossible to master if you didn't grow up with it.
Getting to the point where a native Dutch speaker won't notice you're a furriner, even disregarding accents, is fucking impossible.

If a dumbass Aussie cyclist like Robbie Mcewen can learn to speak Dutch perfectly, so can anyone with half a brain.

It's obviously going to be slightly easier if you marry a Flemish person and live in Belgium for two decades.

If you live in Belgium, it's even harder to learn to speak Dutch correctly.
