Japanese Language Profiency test

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-09 17:37

Anyone take it? Is it worth the $40 bucks?  Any tips or links for it?  I'm taking Level 3 in December.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-09 17:51

That's 20$ less than it costs here. And what do you mean by "tips"? Sankyuu is ridiculously easy.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-09 18:03

I guess I'm just a little nervous about taking it

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-10 1:25

I really wish weaboos would just learn real Japanese instead of faking it. Do you even know what watashi means?

Also romanized spelling is NOT an offical or very accectable form of Japanese. The only time I've ever seen something Japanese that was written with Roman/Latin letters was for English. 可愛い is how you write cute, not kawaii. If you went to Japan and wrote with the english alphabet instead of Japanese Kanji people would just laugh at you.

Flamebait spam. Disregard.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-10 19:34

I wouldn't bother taking it unless it's 一級, 4th and 3rd are about as valuable as boy scout medals.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-11 3:05

Actually, 一級 isn't even native yet. There is still much to learn even if one has passed 一級.

"Much" is an understatement. There are people(not just 日本語学習者)that seem to think they've mastered the language they're learning, just because they have passed the highest test level available. I'm an ikkyuu holder myself and I'm well aware it's going to be 3 times the years it took me to pass ikkyuu before I reach the level of an educated, eloquent native speaker.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-11 12:17

Well it's too late to back out now, thanks for the information.  I'll enjoy my boyscout medal

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-11 22:39

Yes. I bet an average 一級 holder can't read the newspaper.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-12 2:43

I'm going to Japan next year, I've been studying quite a bit, and want to learn all the kanji before I head over there, although it might be a little unrealistic (I'm like 1/3 there)

Anyways, I'm going to be taking some Japanese cram thing where I go to school every day learning Japanese, I'm pretty confident 一級 will be easy for me to pass when I leave, but is it true you can only take it around December? December might be too early for me to pass it, as I'd only be there for half the time I'd expect to, and I want to at least acquire 一級 before I leave..

The JLPT is held only once per year, on the first Sunday of December.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-12 3:23

>>12
I see, damn..
What is the lowest percent you can get to pass? 70? Also, can you take the test most than once a day? In example I fail 一級 hard, but decide to try 二級

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-12 3:27

>>13
70% for level 1 and 60% for others. You can go google for the passing rate of level 1, think it's either 20+% or 30+%. I'm not sure whether you can try 2 at the same time.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-12 3:49

>>13
Two levels on the same Sunday...If they're not overlapping, you can. But ikkyuu lasts several hours, which probably means it overlaps with all other levels. But, if you're in Japan, there might be a way to do them both. You'll probably be exhausted by the time you hand in your last answer sheet though.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-12 16:04

Is there a practice site that tests you online for 1級? Would be great practice to see where I fall into.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-15 21:29

I'd be kind of interested in some sort of practice test too.

Out of curiosity, where will you be studying?  I'm about to graduate, and instead of becoming a functioning member of society, I'm thinking of bettering my [terrible] Japanese at some school for a year or two.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-22 5:40

It's only worth taking if you're taking level 1. Nothing else means shit.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-22 5:41

>>16
If you need practice to see if you can fall into level 1, then you don't fall into level 1. You need 2000 kanji under your belt, for one thing. And if you know 2000 kanji, you probably can pass level 1.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-22 5:42

>>11
You're 1/3 the way of learning "all the kanji"? What do you know, 10,000 kanji already?!?

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-23 2:07

I learned 30,000 kanji last night. I was bored.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-23 2:31

>>21
no need to be a smart ass you could easily tell what I meant
1/3 of all the kanji that I need to know for the test, you know 常用

no one actually knows 10,000 kanji anyways

its like 18k for a year, which is ok I guess

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-24 3:01

>>23
Noone? How about people that take the kan-ken test?

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-24 8:24

>>25
Learning 10,000 kanji is pure intellectual masturbation. An average Japanese doesn't know more than maybe 3000-4000 kanji.

>>1 Did you pass Level 3?

Name: Anonymous 2008-03-15 13:26

You want to test if you can read Japanese? Check out a fucking anime or manga in it's original Japanese form and see if you can read it.

Name: Anonymous 2008-03-15 15:04

>>29
manga and anime are probably no where near the level of ikkyuu because it's made for little kids who don't even know many kanji themselves

Name: Anonymous 2008-03-16 6:28

>>30
an adult one? not hentai but something for an older generation

even then they dumb it down a bit. Still if you can read it fluently then you should get buy easy enough in Japan

Name: Anonymous 2008-03-24 7:07

Name: Anonymous 2008-05-21 22:46

how about a book. like a novel. they have those in japan too you know. plus with the book you must rely only on your knowledge and context clues instead of saw a cake in the picture so thats what it means.

Name: Anonymous 2008-05-24 3:36

>>33
cake?

Name: Anonymous 2008-06-01 18:32

So, how long did it take you to pass several JLPT levels, if you did them?
I'm learning for a year and a half now, and I'd go for 3.
君たちは?

Name: Anonymous 2008-06-02 15:14

I have the level 2. People say don't bother with anything but one on this board, but my professor recommended I take the level two. Said most businesses hiring foreign workers would like it. Of course level one is better and I am studying for it this winter. Having level two is a good way to get your foot in the door.

took me about 2 years to get to that level.
