Anyone take it? Is it worth the $40 bucks? Any tips or links for it? I'm taking Level 3 in December.

I'm going to Japan next year, I've been studying quite a bit, and want to learn all the kanji before I head over there, although it might be a little unrealistic (I'm like 1/3 there)
Anyways, I'm going to be taking some Japanese cram thing where I go to school every day learning Japanese, I'm pretty confident 一級 will be easy for me to pass when I leave, but is it true you can only take it around December? December might be too early for me to pass it, as I'd only be there for half the time I'd expect to, and I want to at least acquire 一級 before I leave..
