First, to add an adjective to a noun do you use the word de for all cases?

ex: sweet (de) nuts

I think (zhi) is also used very rarely, and using (de) in its place isn't the end of the world.

So, yes.

to add an adjective to a noun you don't use de at all.
In a basic sentence, it's just noun-verb.
If you were using an adjective with a verb, then you do use de in some cases.
