New language

Name: OP 2007-08-08 17:42 ID:xuZeUl0T

I pressumed this would be the best place to ask this question so I'll try even if it is actually innapropriate.

I'm a highly communicative person and I love social interaction, (even though I am a regular 4chan user) However I find that only knowing one language limits my possibilities of finding an equally intelligent and like-minded person so I want to learn a secondary language, (well I do know latin, but that's practically dead in terms of use) yet I'm not really good at learning a new language or even anything if I don't have a high interest in it, like most 4channers I lack motivation. High-school french got me nowhere (I'm a Britfag).

I just wanted to ask you on what language you would reccomend me to learn, I don't care about how many people speak it, especially as Chinese is a dominant language yet the chances of me talking to such a speaker is minimal considering thier suppresive government. I'm interested in learning an interesting language that many intelligent and emotive people speak, so I can readily talk to a new kind of being.

Do you understand what I'm on about? As a conclusion, give me advise on what language would be most interesting to learn and even national i.q's. I was thinking of learning Japanese but I from what I've heard most of them speak English anyway, I also like the Germanic and Russian people (not thier government, just most of thier people).

P.S My name is OP for when I reply in this thread I can be identified.

Sorry if I came off as ignorant, It obviously wasn't my intention but as previously said, it's only from the information I have been given, through no fault of my own.

Spanish.

Name: OP 2007-08-08 18:56 ID:xuZeUl0T

Why spanish? I went to Spain once, granted the girls were very nice looking on the beach, but they were all so roudy and I don't really like there history and they have contributed little to science and other things.

"I'm interested in learning an interesting language that many intelligent and emotive people speak, so I can readily talk to a new kind of being."

You're forgetting all of Latin America, and not to mention other several places where Spanish is spoken. The diversity of people who speak it is immense.

Brits are infamous for their inability to learn languages... :/
Start with German. It's your easiest option. Most Japanese do not speak English. BUT, Japanese is insanely hard. Leave it for when you feel confident.

>>6 I suppose so, however i don't really like them, I'm not racist, I just see trains of thought and they don't have a good education system so they aren't really good to talk to on an intellectual level, ofcourse many of them are extremely intelligent, but it's just the majority.

>>7 That is very true, thought Americans were the same as well. However I'm an extremely fast learner (if i do say so myself) and I don't really want to restrict myself on how hard a language will be, because I don't think I'll learn another language after that, I'm more interested in Metaphysics and Science.

Is Russian any easier than Japanese? I was thinking of learning that one, I like the way it sounds and the way it's structured, also I have a likeness to some of the people.

If you couldn't hack it with French then there's no way you'd get anywhere with Japanese.  And Spanish is one of the worst sounding languages on the planet.

OP should consider learning German or Italian or maybe even Hindi.

LOL.
They rather speak Engrish, a different language you could hardly understand.

>I don't really like there history and they have contributed little to science and other things

LOL AGAIN.
Earlier you spoke about finding interesting people and you come up with that sort of pretentious comment. IMHO should try to be interesting yourself before trying to meet people, otherwise you'll just waste your time.
P.S: "THEIR". "THEIR history". You've just contributed little to your language :p

If you happened to fail learning French because of its grammar, give up learning German and Japanese.

I'm sure you'll find plenty of intelligent folks to talk about how inferior people in southern europe and their former colonies are by staying in your intellectual safety zone of western europe

or perhaps you'd want to disregard archaic stereotypes and

oh wait you're british

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-08 23:56 ID:aVliLG8+

Well, fuck, dude. Just learn another Germanic language then.

Sup OP, I am Spanish myself and I don't want you to learn my language. Althouth we Spainfags are unable to speak other languages than our own (including Catalan, Basque, Galician) and our English pronunciation is TERRIBLE (we don't live in Spain but Espain instead, we don't speak English but 'espeak eenglis', and so on), Brits who try to learn Spanish sound even worse, habeeb it. In addition, my country has brought nothing to history but blood, sweat, tears, slavery and Catholic fanaticism (despite having a fairly big population, we only have two Nobel laureates in Science, and one of them -Severo Ochoa- didn't even live in Spain!).

Oh, I forgot. Spanish is spoken in Latin America too. Fuck all wetbacks.

OP, if this thread is any indication, the more people you can talk to, the more people will want to kick you in the crotch/eye. I advise you forget Enlish and learn Esperanto, since it's got fewer speakers and they're probably all too wimpy to hit you.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-10 0:18 ID:i00XzqXn

Learn Spanish. Or else you're going to be mighty lonely in the world soon.

Oh, and fag.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-10 1:27 ID:we2Ih5B/

Learn Chinese. You have a bajillion people to speak to with this language.

And as for the more people I talk to the more people will kick my teeth, it's completly untrue, I get on well with anyone I meet so I think you're just a bunch of hypersensitive assholes right now though.

As for some of the answers, I've already said I didn't want to learn Spanish and definatly not Chinese, Chinese would be too difficult for a start. I might improve my french (It's not too bad, I did get an A but I doubt I could have much of an interesting conversation) then learn german fluently.

Funny that you say something like this, considering you're the one acting like a pompous faggot. In case it's too hard for you to figure, no one here is offended, but rather amused by your delusions.

Well, OP, firstly, you'll never get to conversational level quickly (in 2 years) if you don't put yourself in a environment with only its native speakers. (online environments don't count.)

Learning by yourself intensively will probably get you to a level of understanding of the language of an 8 year old in about 3 years(depending on the language you're learning and your abilities), but you'll still be speaking in broken grammar.

Think twice before wasting time to learn another language, unless your purpose is to impress native speakers with "Hey I know how to ask about the time!", or you just want to impress non-speakers.

If you got nowhere with French even if you were schooled, chances are you won't get anywhere learning any other language.

Mandarin Chinese is pretty easy actually. You don't have to conjugate any verbs or remember whether a word is feminine or masculine. So the grammar is a piece of cake and the words are not long and complex at all. It takes a while to get used to the language, though, but at least for me learning it has been rewarding, useful and fun.

The only hard things really are speaking (tones) and reading/writing (chinese characters), but you can become good at both if you just practise, practise and practise.

I got nowhere because I didn't TRY to learn, throwing around paper airplanes and all. I wasn't the class clown, just everyone hated French because our school completly managed to fuck it up. That's also a good point on being around native speakers, going to a class may be better, once I've got the basics I may move the country that speaks it for 2 years then.

Oh yeah, my intention is not to impress.

>>32
Oh ok, I just heard that it practically had a character for every word or something and some of the characters look very similiar to me. I may check it out.

Being online so often I'm starting to say blashemous things like 'color' *shivers*.

Also, does no-one like russian at all?

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-13 8:42 ID:CZVB/HtV

What about Korean?  Many people speak it, and you're probably more likely to meet a Korean than a Chinese.

Or you could try Arabic.

If French isn't your bag, maybe Danish or Swedish is.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-13 9:26 ID:zUcNBbc9

i am chinese, there ARE many of us to talk to (though i dont kno about 4chan specifically)..
i think it is a bit too hard for foreigners, many westerners in beijing and all of them, even the ones studying chinese full time in college cant speak for shit.
i would recommend danish--i learned it in college. it is close to english, but different enough to be interesting.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-13 17:36 ID:Heaven

Oh God Danish, it's like spoken by only six million people. Also, Danish sounds absolutely ridiculous, so if you want to sound like a retard, be my guest and learn it. Plus, you can't impress anyone with it, they'll be like "Oh, Danish. Yeah, umh...good for you! ^_________^;;;"
