first, get in some japanese basic course, learn hiragana and katakana, and impress your friends with words like neko or baka. Then you learn kanji, find that you hate them, lose interest, and then you know it's time to GTFO.

People who learn the language just to be cool should GTFO of Japanese faster than >>1. Once they are done impressing friends, there's no more motivation to continue.

What's cool about learning Japanese? It's no different than learning any other language.

Oh gawd plz don't even CONSIDER Chinese unless you are really dedicated. Not only is kanji (hanzi, in this case) a pain in the ass, but speaking and listening is a nightmare if it's not your native tongue. And apart from showing off at your local Chinese restaurant, you will probably not have much use for it because of the relatively low output of pop-culture from China and Taiwan when compared to Japan. And don't plan on using it in business contexts, there are plenty of overseas immigrants with better-than-passable English to take that spot. 相信我說的話,學中文學得不好玩。

And yes, what the others say is also true, don't bother with Japanese either unless you're serious about it. If it's just for cursing, German sounds equally cool.

I can, although I'd rather say 本物のロリコン. Either way, I don't see what's gross about it. As for being illegal, it depends on whether you live in a country with law-enforcement-backed thought-police or in a reasonable democracy.

To be fair, Taiwan does produce quite a bit of pop culture, and there's Mandopop music from China, Singapore, Malaysia and maybe HK. It's just that Americans are most familiar with Japanese pop culture. Chinese pop music tends to be sappy where Japanese tends to be vacuous, so that's a toss up either way; Taiwan also has silly gameshows and stuff.

Chinese is fucking hard to learn but may be useful if you're dedicated enough, since China is growing. But it is fucking hard, much harder than Japanese. Not encouraged if you don't intend to put yourself in a Mandarin-speaking environment.

Singapore doesn't have its own pop culture(nor culture) though, it's just a fucking copycat. Basically it try to steal everything from Japan, Hongkong, Taiwan, and America, and call it its own.

You should probably learn something easier like Spanish or French, unless you actually intend to live in or visit Japanese-speaking places frequently. And since hardly anyone is dedicated enough to learn kanji unless you grew up with it.. I'd suggest spanish.
But if you really want to learn an oriental language, korean's probably the easiest of Chinese or Japanese.

except that Korean's going to be freaking useless, besides watching Korean soap dramas.

Pretty much ^^^. Again, only learn a language that you expect you'll be using on a near daily basis. Otherwise it's a waste of time.

Don't change these.
