I've never sent mail to Japan but I have a letter and it has one stamp on it. Not sure if that helps..

hmm, well my friend told me to put 5 stamps, since he used to have a jap pen pal, so I'm going to hope that's good enough. damn envelope looks ridiculous with 5 stamps.

Doesn't the amount of stamps depend on the stamp type? Maybe you should call your local post office.

The price (i.e. the number and kinds of stamps you have to put on the letter) depends on the weight and size of the letter. Just look it up on the U.S. postal service website.
