remembering in this case, as far as I'm concerned, meant living as the colons of old had done, that is, impoverished and on farms in a mini-third world country right up until WWII and even for some time after that as the power of the old regime (made up of the regressive provincial government, catholic church and large english-dominated corporations) waned (IT WAS THE PITS).

moreover in this case 'me' is a reflexive (maybe that's an outdated term but whatever) pronoun used to indicate the subject is performing the action upon itself
je me lave les cheveux = I'm washing my hair
