How hard is it for a normal English speaker to learn Finnish? I hear that the language can be pretty difficult.

It's just the cases, more or less, that trip most up.

It's not that hard to learn the basics, especially if you have had previous experience learning a language. Plus, the amount of willpower has an effect too. Someone who really wants to learn it is going to do better than someone who is only mildly interested in it.
It's more like this, Missä sinä opiskelet Suomea. ;)

Sen pitäisi olla suomi, ei Suomi. You see, Suomi is the name of the country, while suomi is the name of the language. The difference is in the capitalization, names of languages are always written with a minuscule letter while names of countries are capitalized.
Finnish is language of Mordor if compared in with Estonian; Every time I hear it I get strange assosiotions about Hobbits. Such a cute little hobbit language. Like finnish blended with russian and twise more complicated. =)

Take the "n" out of "tanuki" and add an extra "k" and you'll get taukki, a Finnish word for moron.
