How the hell do you explain Americans or Brits how to pronounce the Dutch 'eu'. Is there _any_ English word out there that carries the same sound?

For you English people: 'eu' is not pronounced 'you'

the dutch 'eu' sounds the same as the german 'ö' (oe) like in 'blöd' or 'schön'.
if you find how to pronounce "Goethe", you got it.
it's somewhere between the 'u' in 'fun' and 'ou' in 'you'.

on wikipedia there is a phonetic aid for you:

Basically, English speakers, to learn how to pronounce it, say 'e' as in 'pet.' While holding the vowel sound, shape your lips into an 'o' shape while still pronouncing the 'e.' That's the oe from German, and the eu from Dutch.

In historical linguistics, English lost its front round vowels long time ago. This might be from both Celtic and Romance influence.
