bruteforce. I looked and memorized how 5 kanas look at a time and read some text to recognize them in.

I can read the well, but I can't write at all.

An alternative is to go to your public library and look around the foriegn language section.  I don't have anything particular to recommend...

Wikibooks has a nice tutorial section for the kana.  I would recommend making flashcards for them, learning hiragana first.  Then, just print a bunch of kana articles off the japanese wikipedia and translate them phonetically for practice.  Three weeks, tops.

repeat writing the same letter until it's burned into your mind, you can master it in a day or two. while browsing japanese sites or manga raws, try to recognize the kana from time to time, that'll help you remember em'.

Buy Wolfgang Hadamitzky & Mark Spahn - Kanji & Kana. It's perfect for learning the kana and the jooyoo kanji. Inclusive stroke order and everything it's perfect. It's used here at university.

Learn the kana before kanji. You cant learn yomikata without knowing hiragana :P

I haven't read Heisig's booklet on teaching yourself the kana, but based on my experience with his kanji-learning technique, I'm pretty sure it is very efficient.

Jōyō (常用) means common use. In this case, it refers to a list of 1945 kanjis that are to be taught throughout primary and secondary education to all Japanese pupils. (Basically the characters everybody should know).

Don't change these.
