Rapidshare "10 downloads" limit.

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-10 6:15

A wonderful little development in rapidshare's bid to make money.  Not to fault the people who host stuff on rapidshare, but they don't realize that only the first 10 people who click on the link can download the file.  After that, it just turns into a thread of subsequent posters begging for a re-host, who go ignored.  Who do I send suggestions to regarding this?  What can we do about this?  People are generous enough to upload the content, but no one is able to download it.

Convince people to use Megaupload or Mediafire?
Do all "old" Rapidshares work, or is /rs/ now chock full of undownloadable files?

Ever since rapidshare started to go down the shitter a couple of years ago, I've been uploading the content I share to Mediafire and the like.  I've been trying to encourage others to do the same, but everyone and their dog knows "rapidshare."  Hell, we have a board named after it specifically for shared files.  Rapidshare knows how popular they are with people sharing files online and they're getting greedy.  I'm all for effective money-making, but this tactic isn't going to go over well here.  Hopefully this blows up in their face.

Dunno if the old files are affected (I can't imagine that they are, but I also never saw rapidshare pulling some shit like this).  The limit doesn't apply to files uploaded to the high-grade paying members' accounts, just the free ones which are probably 99% of the good shared here.

Anon 1: That picture is great!  Can you post the rest?

*5 minutes later*

OP: Just uploaded the archive to rapidshare.  Here's the link.

*0.1 seconds and 10 anons later*

Anon 11: WTF?  Link is dead.  Please re-up.
Anon 63: ANYONE WHO GRABBED THE FILE PLEASE REHOST SOMEWHERE BESIDES RS!
Anon 375: FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
ad infinitum or until the thread falls off the board.

I got lucky last night in a case where the original uploader came back to the thread, saw the requests for a reupload and obliged us.  The first of many threads over the past few weeks.  Like I said, a lot of people are going to be pissed over this, but until someone tries to grab a file hosted on a free acct and is rudely awakened, they're going to continue sharing through rapidshare.  I don't see this happening over night, but here's hoping.

Speaking of Megaupload:

I've just been sitting here for a *full 30 minutes* trying to download one crappy 10-page manga from there, and I've got a pretty fast connection. Is anybody else being forced to wait forever for the site to open?

thanks.

Isn't there a free account album thingie that doesn't have the 10 limit?  Granted, most anons don't even want to register for free.

I have never had a problem with any of the mega* sites, but I do recall hearing people complain a lot about them a few years ago.  It seems to be an issue by region.

agree

Ugh, that is pretty low. I wonder what will happen to sites like freebookspot.org now, most of their files are hosted by rapidshit.

Use http://sendspace.com/ instead. As I recall, they're similar to rapidshare only without a limit. I think they pay for it by making you wait 30 seconds before the download link appears on the page.
Anyway, it has always worked well for me.
