combative attitudes on 4chan

On 4chan (or similar sites) when someone talks like an asshole, or talks in all caps, or flames someone are they just poking fun at chan culture or are they genuinely pissed off at whoever they are talking to?  Personally I am very understanding and so I never get mad at people on the net.  However on 4chan I do pretend to shout as if I was angry because I think it is understood that pretending to be angry is a joke.  Is that true or this a misperception of mine?

For bonus points you can flame me for being an idiot if you think I am right.
