Like 71 said, there's a difference between a pedophile (someone who is attracted to prepubecent persons), and a rapist (someone who can't/doesn't control themselves regarding hot-dicking charity work).
The media puts them in the same boat because it sells. Everyone who bases their views entirely on media input is probably closer to be retarded than a person against lolicon due to personal issues and experiances.

I think lolicon/shotacon are just gender specific versions of the english term pedophile. In Japan, it doesn't matter if the person is real of fabricated- you can still be labeled as such.
None the less, I still think there's a fundemental difference between drawn loli/shota and actual CP; because you can find one attractive, and yet the other not so. I think even US law rules accordingly. An image has to resemble an actual photograph only so much for it to be classified as genuine CP.
