All 4chan mods used to be / are still 10buxwhores.
So is it really worth paying money? Just look at these guys and draw your own conclusion. If you ever want to be a mod at 4chan you should be like them, otherwise... maybe you could put your cash to a better use.

After I paid my tenbux and actually started reading up on SA and RH history, I got a deeper and more fulfilling understanding of 4chan's roots (and also stole some things from FYAD and posted them to /b/)
I think the whole idea of "good community by heavy, formalized modding" is flawed personally. It just makes everyone more uptight. People may not like wading through lots of noise to find content, but content doesn't naturally arise from a "general discussion" type of message board.
SA makes the model financially successful, but that's because it capitalizes on humor - certain kinds of humor - as content. The forum itself doesn't really reflect this so much at it's current size, though.

I would pay the 10 bucks just to read the forums. They seem fun.

4chan came from Crazy Moot's crazy idea to make an English 2chan.net, with ADTRW members as mods. The original focus was on anonymously posted porn; /d/ was originally /l/. Moot did not realize at first that 4chan could get as big as futaba.
Also, SA has a few mods that suck cocks if you know what I mean >:(

That's not my full opinion though. If you want high-quality, irreverent comedy at all hours of the day and you think that's worth $10, go ahead and join. If you don't think it's worth $10 then try /b/ or Gamefaqs which are both nearly as entertaining. On the other hand if you are looking for topical and informative conversations, stimulating intellectual discussion, or honest wisdom, then Jesus man, GET OFF OF 4CHAN.

I was wondering about this a while ago too... while I enjoy Lowtax's sense of humor and SA as a site in general, I have a general hatred for the elitism that goes on in name registration based forums. Anonymous for life. Still, it's only 10 bux, and to someone who is really into internet culture like myself I've always thought it'd probably be worth the money just to gain access to one of the major brewing grounds for internet memes and such. Although I still haven't gotten around to registering.

There are so many people on SA that it's really not that much of a big deal. But I'll ask you this: why do you care so much about being at the headquarters of Internet comedy where it starts?

It's just $10. I paid and once you look past the junk like GBS, FYAD, and to a degree ADTRW, the actual discussion boards are very fun and can be informative.
It's a minor one time charge (unless you act like an asshat and get banned), and at least it isn't a subscription.
You DO realize that He posted that three years ago, right?
Try e-mailing Him.
shii@shii.org "Start your letters with "Dear Shii" for maximum spam filter avoidance."
He doesn't even come here anymore because most of Anonymous are made of asshats.

Of course he does, he made this post for the purpose of trolling. I can tell from the shitty emoticon and because I have seen quite a few trolls in my time.

There seem to be a few asshats among the namefags as well...
Some threads are alright. But even then it devolves in the same circlejerk as most 4chan threads, except there you have a stable name to hop on and be a dick to.
I've seen more thoughtful and intelligent posts on anonymous boards than I have on SA.
SA has some very informative thread, and most of which are distilled in their own individual forum with actual content and ideas. Most of the posters make an effort to communicate his/her idea rather than act like an ass-clown, such as on /b/ and other anonymous image boards. Not having threads get derailed by forced memes and other shite, certainly makes for a better experience for those who are looking for actual content and not inane filler. So I say go for it, $10 is a small price to pay if you want access to an intelligent community. And then of course, there is always using sub reddits and the like, which can also be a good place for info/content/humor, if you want to stick to free forums.
