Politics aside, it was well organized, had a better layout than typical imgboards, and had more specific categories. Renchan was also nice, though it lasted about 3 days.

More specific is right. Loli/clean, loli/ecchi, loli/hentai, yuri/loli, loli/feet... Requiring signup was stupid though because part of posting strange and unsavoury categories of porn on the internet is anonymity.
5chan wasn't an imageboard proper, it was just a free porn forum like Hentai Lover's Club. (An imageboard wouldn't require registration, and it wouldn't have a separate field for a tripcode as if it's an important part of your post.) But hey, it was pretty good at providing free porn.

I thought 5chan was one of the best ones. Specific boards meant I could look at alternative stuff without wading through floods of dickgirls and "shitting dicknipples". I found the hentaikey registration to be anonymous enough, seeing as you could use a disposable account like mailinator to register with it.
