Fire has the ability to burn almost anything organic to neat, little crisps. I think it has to do with cannibalism and BBQ.

It comes from D&D. You have to kill trolls with fire, or burn their corpses else they come back to life. They also have a weakness for fire-based weapons or magic.

Trolls and other regenerating creatures can also be suffocated. Or you can keep hacking at the corpse until the troll starves to death, but that's kind of boring.

Well anything hurts them, it's just that they quickly regenerate anything but fire and acid, even if you kill them.

But, if you give them enough poison to knock them out, I think that makes it much easier to set them on fire.
