are there beat em ups that use sophisticated moves like there is in fighting games like street fighter 2, mortal kombat?
i just searched "beat em up mortal kombat" and actually saw at least a game trying to do this concept, i am about to check youtube to see if it "holds". other examples pls

Guardian Heroes might fit what you're looking for. It's not quite as complex as a full fledged fighting game like Street Fighter, but it's closer than most other brawlers.

i think there could be some development in that direction for an ambitious indie game developer who is into 2d. fighting games do nothing for me anymore and beat em ups, well, it's not exactly the "it" genre these days.

re: beat em ups: i guess it could be argued that god of war, boobretta etc are it's continuation. haven't play them and was more focused on the 2d side of things.

I really enjoyed Def-Jam fight for NY because of the movie references.
It wasn't gay like that UFC and MMA video games where you can get knocked out in one punch if you run into the guy's fist. Don't even get me started on that Krav Maga faggotry where two dudes dry-hump on the floor. That's not fighting; That's foreplay!
