So, /V/, thoughts on Skyrim?

Name: Arvas_Drenam 2011-10-08 3:04

I have always been a fan of Bethesda. Fallout 3 was a great game, but the Elder Scrolls series is what draws me in. There is something awesome about making any kind of character you want, and being thrown into a world to do...well, what you want. Morrowind had a considerably better story than Oblivion did. But, it's age makes it less popular to the general public.
Sort of like Fallout 3, nobody remembers previous games that were before the 360. Oblivion had better graphics and was very well received. Now, does that make it a better game? Absolutely not. Morrowind had a much better story, as I said, along with a better locale, and more weapons (such as spears). I think they were about equal. but, that's just my opinion.
Now, here comes Skyrim. Will this be the pinnacle of the Elder Scrolls series, giving us amazing graphics, storyline, and everything else? I think it will. I like everything I've seen about it. However, some people see it very differently. I have some friends on the 360 that think it will be turrable. In fact, my friend Chris saw a thread on here talking about it which convinced another friend of mine that it would be a disappointment. But it seems that everything we liked that they took out, they replace with something else. Birth signs=Guardian Stones, Skills removed=spells/attacks put in another category, spellcrafting taken out=smithing put in. There are more examples, but I won't bore you. I doubt that this will change any minds, but I wanted to say my opinion. It'll ,most likely be attacked or trolled, or at the very least my friends will see it and harass me. But, I'll have Skyrim. :)

Want to know my opinion on Skyrim, it would be awfull, mostly because it will be too easy. Killing a dragon in any game should be only a priviledge to the greatest warriors, now every hobo can do it, thanks Bethesda.

Name: Arvas_Drenam 2011-10-14 18:21

Dragons don't even show up until you have leveled up some and played a bit of the story. The hero in the gameplay demo was around level 30.

Name: Anonymous 2011-10-15 13:26

who cares I just want to steal bread from bread baskets

Name: Anon 2011-10-17 12:20

>>3 and one more reason Skyrim would suck! Same as Oblivion enemies show up for your level, only so you could kill them. In Morrowind it was great because all enemies had fix level. Enemies were split by territories (Red Mountain had the greatest), city had mostly a few dire rats regardless of your level.

Stopped reading because it's simply not true.

Name: The pondering vgn 2011-10-19 4:18

Skyrim will be a good game. Not as good as oblivion mind you, but lets remember that this game is made by bethesda. They're known for their quality games and providing their fan base with an almost unlimited amount of playing time. I still find myself wanting to play oblivion and fallout 3 and I know for a fact there are still places left to explore in both games. I look forward to killing every stinking dragon I can find but I agree with >2 that it should be a privledge to do so. Hopefully it wont turn into a complete shit show of dragons once level 30 rolls around.

So, I heard pvp on this game was great.

Oh, this game doesnt have pvp?
Wait, it doesnt have any online feature at all?
Why the fuck would you play an RPG if you didnt want to show off all your swag?

It was a great game

but bethesda/obsidian learned some lessons and came out with a better game: Fallout new vegas

I wish NV had random encounters
I miss fallout 3's random encounters, having to deal with an ambush by 3 albino radscorpions is scary when you don't have a weapon with a significant punch to it, makes the player have to think about the new situation at hand.

NV could have profited from some random spawns I agree. A bigger map in general without that awful mountain clipping too.

Skyrim looks better than Oblivion but that's not saying much at all.

skyrim is a fallout 3 re-hash pretty much.
so not much will be new. It's also no decent sequel for a more morrowind-esqe lore and gameplay.

>>7 Bethesda no longer provide quality games. While they get more and more graphically enhanced, the gameplay is more and more 2 easy and too "flat", sometimes it becomes even repetitive. Skyrim will be worser than Oblivion as Oblivion was worser than Morrowind.
>>9 Yeah you idiot Skyrim is following it's franchise by being an RPG (not MMO). If you really like an MMO with all that PVP, online features, endless farming, repetitive grinding (and otherwise retarded gameplay) than Skyrim would be a bad choice, go back to world of warcrap!

Name: Anonymous 2011-10-27 2:10

over-hyped over-rated rpg, the last good elder scrolls was morrowind, get over it, dragons dogma will be better than skyrim

Name: balls 2011-11-06 19:23

Everyone here is a bunch of butthurt weeaboos.

Bethesda makes it so dragons are the hardest fucking things to fight, they wouldn't spend all this time making a shit game, and if you read ANYTHING you would know that it isn't an easy fuckthrough.

There are enemy areas at fixed levels, but they cater random encounters to be more in your range.

It has a radiant storyline.  This means that the game caters quests and shit going on to who you are, where you are, what youre doing, what youve done, and how you play.  This is an astounding breakthrough.

And online?  Fuck that.  Elder Scrolls has always been one player.  These are buffed traditional rpgs.  They refuse to make it online because of weeaboo faggots that only pick these games up to troll.  If you want to troll, go play WoW or MW3.  I respect the decision to stick to their roots.

Most of you probably started playing ps2 when you turned 12, and have since not had any understanding of quality games, as you played kingdom hearts for hours on end, talking about depth.

Eat a dick, I'll enjoy my good games while you guys play dark souls or some bullshit.

I thought kingdom hearts was brilliant. And the sequel... Epic!

Skyrim? I wouldn't have heard about it unless everyone kept going on and on about it. It's apparently "Running Around the Woods with a Magical Sword - Part 105" but it's overhyped, so everyone's playing it because they're stupid, I guess. Have fun playing elves with magical swords, I guess. I did that in the 80s, before I grew up.

Good news! Mojang is right on schedule. Four days from release, their development cycle has ended the "pre-release" phase of "There is definitely, definitely no bugs in this version." and entered the "release canidate" phase of "There is definitely, definitely, DEFINITELY no bugs in this version, honestly!".
...so apparently this is how the Minecraft world is SUPPOSED to look:

Swiss cheese, with huge, faggot-shaped holes in it.
This is what happens when you let faggots into your game, people. B-52 bombers couldn't have ruined it more.

Skyrim, as I said on /v/ on the 11th, destroyed my negative preconceptions and exceeded my expectations. I heard for months the bitching that went on. Not just here, but everywhere. "Oh, no classes, or birthsigns, no repair skill, only three major skills" and on and on and on. With all the talk that was going on, Skyrim sounded like it was going to be a Cod clone with Swords that had a gigantic empty world with pre-scripted dragon encounters and a three hour plot with uninteresting side content.

First of all, I'm only halfway through the story, and I'm loving it. Learning the wisdom of the head of the Greybeards was a memorable moment in the story, something I won't forget having done in a while. Armor skill is hardly missed, as smithing feels a thousand times better than using repair hammers. Nothing feels better than charging into battle with a weapon you designed to set your enemies on fire, while wearing battle armor made of the finest dwarven materials (all hand crafted by you).

The world is engaging, the quests are enjoyable, the environment feels truly massive and with plenty to explore and do, fighting dragons is truly a shit ton of fun, and the magic system is intuitive, in-depth and truly customizable.

The game is good. And I will enjoy it for years to come, as I did Oblivion, though I can safely say I'll never play Elder Scrolls IV again.

Name: Anonymous 2011-11-14 15:19

My only issue is the UI. It's not terrible, but it's still bad. Imagine if in a Zelda game, the UI for an item took up the entire screen and forced you to scroll left and right to select the appropriate item you want to use, as opposed to what's actually implemented, where you can see ALL of your items on one screen and just move the selection over to them. Bad design on Bethesda's part, for both PC and console versions.

Well, at least if you're playing on the PC it will be modded.

Name: Anonymous 2011-11-14 15:43

Overall it's a decent game.
It's definitely a step-up from Oblivion even if the simplified character customization is a step-down.
I didn't find the interface too bothersome, only the overall quest quality so far (I can count the number of interesting & good quests on one hand) and shitty main story (seriously falls apart near the end) dissapoint me at the moment.

How do I beat Vokun? I can't do shit to him as a L7 mage. My ice and fire spells do nothing and I can't run up and melee him in the face unless I want to be lit on fire. Used every pot I can think of and every dirty trick in the book and nothing: Before I even get him down to 50% that stupid bitch is dead and I fail the quest.

Name: Anonymous 2011-11-14 15:52

The main things that irk me about Skyrim are the fact that you can be a Wizardthief Barbarian with virtually no drawbacks. That, and the fact that some of the missions are so streamlined and linear, it hurts, especially finding that piece of evidence in the Battleborns home, that was ridiculous. They might as well have titled that book "Yes, We Are Holding Prisoner".

Name: Anonymous 2011-11-14 15:58

Okay /games/ (god it feels weird typing that)

Basically, I have a level 26 spell sword, but it is getting hard to kill things, I find myself casting like 6 or 7 destruction spells that do little damage, and having to beat shit with my mace. Its kind of annoying because I literally have to gay most fights now because I am having trouble. The character is the leader of every major guild and has explored much, but I am considering a new character.

I wanted to make a dark elf, who was sneaky and used dual wielding, archery, and enchanting/smithing.

My question is: Any advice for a sneaky character? How good is dual wielding? Does the TYPEs of weapons dual wielded matter? I know that in real life if people dual wielded it was often a long blade and a short blade to retain balance, but does it matter in skyrim? And what is the best way to deal damage with dual wielding? Should I spam the dual hit power attack, and then just spam my better weapon? Or should I do the "out of stamina" double attack too? Is it worth it to use, say, a dagger + sword or just dual maces since they do the most damage?

Oh, and how do you do the sneak auto kills? I did ONE in my other playthrough, and the rest of the time I just did a power attack from behind.

Name: Anonymous 2011-11-14 16:02

I don't know if I can even bring myself to finish this game.  I find myself bored as hell. I feel no connection to my character or this world, I find myself doing tedious tasks repeatedly and being reward for these with next to nothing. The only magic spells I've found remotely useful have been Candlelight and Detect Life. I went and got married, arrived at my home in Whiterun only to find there wasn't much I gained out of this.  She cooks me a meal. Oh boy.  I'm about set to ignore all the side-quests and exploration that makes sandboxes typically good in favor of just focusing on the main story and getting this over with.

I take it you're playing on Master.

Use daggers for the 15x sneak kill and then switch to dual wielding one weapon type you have mastery in, either of the 3 since there are no dagger skills other than the sneak crit bonus IIRC.

Also if you seriously want to one-shot things, roll an Orc. That 15x becomes 30x with the racial. Sneak power attack and you'll basically kill anything in the game in one hit.

The 15x dagger is your best bet.
Using a bow as distraction you can get it even with multiple enemies.

Here how goes:

>Sneak attack with bow, instantly use silent roll to get to another location
>Enemy will go to your previous location, roll back and 15x kill
>roll again and the next enemy will come back to the place, ready for you to strike again.

It might require a little luck and patience, but I've had several encounters with 5+ enemies that I've managed to all kill with daggers sneak attack.

If they wander off you just lure them with the bow again.

Hey /v/ I'm a completionist but also like to keep true to my in-game RP.

Basically, would a dark elf side with the Empire or the Stormcloaks? Knowing that the high elves have grips on the Empire and the Stormcloaks treat non-Nords like shit, which would be the more sensible option for a dark elf?

Name: Anonymous 2011-11-14 18:22

It was a major letdown, the graphics are seriously almost last-gen. And the gameplay is just more and more grinding.

Name: Anonymous 2011-11-14 18:38

Depends.  Dark elves are pretty varied in their beliefs, so you'd have to go a little deeper into his character.

Though I'd say probably the Empire.  They're known for treating Dunmer decently (at least relatively, letting them retain the most native cultural elements in their home province) and they're not too fond of the other elves so they'd be eager to support the Empire against the Aldmeri Dominion.  It is possible you could have a Dunmer who hates the influence the Empire had over Morrowind and wants to fight for independence in the hopes that it'll weaken the Empire even further.

So what, did Oblivion have PS1 graphics?  Because Skyrim is way better than Oblivion's graphics, and being an early game in this generation it was one that sort of set the bar for later games.  It doesn't look great everywhere, I'll admit, but I think that the graphics generations comparisons are getting progressively sillier and sillier over time.  Neither Skyrim nor Divinity 2 look like PS2 games at all, and I get that people could use it as hyperbole but they try to present it as a serious complaint and it just comes of silly.

I'm very impressed with it. There's so much today, and the atmosphere and immersion is amazing. It's got everything Oblivion lacked. Seriously, the only thing wrong with Oblivion were all its flaws that took you out of the game (mudcrab-conversations etc.). Now that all of that has been fixed, it's a great Elder Scrolls game, that's worthy of the title. If you don't like it, there's something wrong with you and/or you don't like in which direction games are heading nowadays in general.

So has anyone else found some strange shit on their journeys? Some examples:

A lake near Whiterun with a skeletal hand reaching out of it that has an iron sword gripped tightly. If you remove any of the two, nothing happens and they just fall down into the lake.

Up on a mountain on my way to a Dragon place (you know, these things that are marked on your map, and when you get there there's a Dragon and a stone with a word of power), I found a "Shrine of Julianos". This shrine was only a skeleton half buried in the snow with a small black stone on it, that said Shrine of Julianos. You get a normal blessing and everything, just like on any other shrine.

A crater that looks like from a meteor impact near Riften. It's like 5 meters in diameter, but there's nothing in it (I'd maybe expected moonstone or something). Also no clues near it, just a big crater.

Black painted rocks with gold markings on them. They look just like regular big rocks dotting the landscapes, but they're painted black and have gold lines and dots on them. You can't interact with them either.

Also I've got a question. Near Riften there's a house that's called Blackwater Refuge or Outpost or something. There's apparently a band of mercenaries in there, who attacked me. I killed them all, no quest was triggered though. The house is spacious and nice, is it safe to move my stuff in there? Will it disappear?

I cant decide to make my assassin argonian or dark elf

I like the back story of the dark elves more but the argonian looks bad ass, but out of place in almost all the armor.

Both have decent racials but +10 to destruction would be a waste.

God damn it I cant decide

Don't change these.
