D1 was good. D2 is better, granted, but that's how progression is supposed to go anyways.
You do have to have a certain level of patience in dealing with the slow traveling speed, but it is in some ways a more open game. Specifically, as any class you can resort to any form of combat and learn any skills, that is, up to a point based on which class you are. Which is nice because it allows for things like using healing spell as a warrior or rogue or not always having to use up your mp/scrolls/charges to kill anything at a distance as a wizard.
The point is D1 was the starting point, and both in that and on it's own it is good. Although not everyone will enjoy it or even most people these days, but some will and many did, and there would have been no D2 without the groundwork D1 laid.
