I got Minecraft (Alpha) yesterday. I played for a few hours. I made a castle, a dungeon, and a house. I realized that's pretty much what the entire game was. It's like Legos, but slower and you can kill stuff. If you're thinking about getting it, the free version is almost exactly the same. The weapons/enemies don't really add anything to the game. Don't waste 9.95 Euros on it.

If you thought enderman EROSION was bad, then get a load of this: Animals are now permanent. They never spawn or despawn anymore. If you kill them, they're gone. If they fall down a deep cave or drop and die, they're gone. If the endlessly spawning wolves get to the sheep before you do, then no wool for you. If you want food now, you're going to have to grow it out of the ground. Unless you somehow herd all the animals into safe houses, they're going to die sooner or later.
This was meant to be part of an animal breeding system, but with the actual breeding not implemented, or even a herding system, it's just an extinction program.
I, for one, still got 1.7 installed.
I got cows all over my yard, and I kill them all I want.
You jelly?
