So, yesterday was an epic day for the Ys community. After wyrdwad started translating Ys Origin with the help of a really coal italian hacker named doppiapunta, everyone stopped to care about Nightwolve, since if we had someone who actually cares about us and is true to the spirit of *fan-translating* something, we don’t need a crazy bastard’s who’s fucking egocentrical patch. But guess who showed up. Nightwolve. Sending mails to wyrdwad telling him to stop his patch because he has a MASTER PLAN under his sleeves to fuck all the Ys fans. wyrdwad got really surprised with the contents of NW’s email and decided to share it, and thank god he did, because it’s both really sad and hilarious at the same time:
“After the Felghana leak, it was the last straw and I decided I only wanna deal with REAL Falcom fans in the future, for the most part. REAL Falcom fans… Those that buy Falcom products and donate (fun fact: per capita, most donations come from Falcom game owners, not the warez). I wanna work for THEM and ONLY THEM! See, the warez folks ARE the problem and I wanted to have a way to filter ALL of them out… Sure, there are some decent folks that stole the game also, but they don’t deserve to have it in English to boot (well, not unless it’s an abandonware ‘home of the underdogs’ situation). Understand? So, I thought about how this could be accomplished. I came up with the idea/vision of releasing an Ys Origin patch under a so called “Falcom Friend or Foe” campaign. How would it work, roughly?
1) You are first given a program which asks you to insert an original Ys Origin DVD-ROM. It would also ask you to report the serial # that’s included inside your Falcom packaging. The results of this disc authenticity test are then sent to the server.
2) If a pirated disc is detected, YOU ARE REJECTED from continuing any further! Your minimum required donation will be refunded to you and you’ll be sent packing for having wasted my time and lied about owning a real disc!! Of course, if an original disc is detected, you will proceed further. (Most of the warez pirates would be eliminated from this point anyway, because they don’t wanna pay anything, not to me, and certainly not $100 to Falcom… So that’s already about >10,000 video game thieves you eliminate right off the bat. It’s not 100% though, because ~100-150 with pirated copies will donate, hence the disc check must be relied upon to send them packing.)
3) OK, now that you’ve proven you’re a real Falcom fan with a purchased disc, you
will be given a login account and a link. Clicking the link, logging in, will result in an ActiveX type of interface that would begin the patch installation (This limits one to IE only, though). My idea is not to have an executable; it would be a web page that would patch your game as this cannot be spread and it’s less likely to fall into the hands of hackers so as to crack it.
Some details: The install patch files would be encrypted to foil crack attempts and
by dealing with mostly REAL Falcom fans that bought the game, any patch file would less likely be passed along to the wrong people. The patch has to be locked down to the computer with the generation of a unique ID. If someone has to repatch because they got a new computer, their original login account would still be good. I would have to make something like you get to patch every 3 months or something like that. If there is suspicious activity (too much patching attempts), I’ll be able to monitor all, etc.”
Seriously. what.the.fuck. Fan-made DRM? WHO THE HELL would pay this “minimum required donation” to NIGHTWOLVE in order to get a fucking FAN-TRANSLATION PATCH? Aren’t we missing the point of *donations* here, Nightwolve? Eh?
What’s worse is that the same guy who typed all that retarded bullshit against piracy used to run a fucking hub on DC++ where he’d share all type of shit. Priceless.
tl;dr Nightwolve, die in a fucking fire.
