Half Life 2 Engine FPS disaster

Name: dotJack 2009-01-25 16:21

Hello,

I need some help and I hope this is the place to get it.

When I'm playing L4D or CS:S; the fps varies to the point of being 1 - 4 fps. It seems to not be affected by the number of things on screen.

For instance, in Left 4 Dead, I can have dozens of zombies running at me clawing away, as is the usual case with zombies, with perfect fps and smooth gameplay.

In the next instance my fps can drop to 1-4 while the only thing on the screen is a wall. It seems to be tied to loading something, I'm presuming the next part of a level or some models.

It's the same with the highest graphics and the lowest settings. Including resolution and dxdirect version, which I tried to no avail.

Is there a way to get the half life 2 engine preload everything or at least most things so I don't experience these fps-lag-spikes.

I don't know if this is a clear enough explanation or if anyone can help but there it is.

For reference,
I'm on a laptop;
AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Tech. TL-50 1,60 GHz
2GB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS

Well if the problem is load times then the issue is probably with your hard-drive. Is it old? Does it have a lot of free space left? Have you defragmented it and all that?

What he said.

Check for available disk space on all partitions also.

Don't change these.
