What's a good price to set shareware at or how much would you be willing to spend on a shareware game? There are some games I would like to make in my spare time. Most notably is a card/adventure game similar to shandalar (travel the land, collect cards, battle people for ante). I was also thinking of a couple simple strategy/map games.
Although I've seen most shareware seems to be priced at 19.95 USD, I'm not sure I could charge more than 10 bucks for a simple game. What is your opinion?

I don't think any game, even a mass developed app killers, should be more than twenty dollars. Much less an underdeveloped shareware title, although I did pay for Doom II at 19.99
Who cares? If it's any good people are going to pirate and crack it anyway.

I would consider that a milestone of success. There's no reason to leave your game oblivious to pirating. If your protection scheme doesn't interfere with non-pirating players, then they have nothing to complain about. Who cares if someone eventually puts the effort in to pirate it?
There will always be some people who pay for things and those people are the ones you should try to satisfy.
I don't pay for software.
Actually making it shareware would make not to consider playing it at all.

What part of shareware is turning so many people off? The name? Nag screens? Registration? Association to amateurs/indies?

Any game with digital distribution: $5-10. $15 in some cases. Going with a higher price won't hurt too much since piracy is often a consequence of the problems associated with making payment. (Also, make payment easy: paypal, etc.)
People tend not to buy shareware since demos are usually fairly functional. For those who simply dislike it, I don't understand that at all, but w/e.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Is there anything in particular I should avoid doing to the payment process?
My current idea for the demo is to allow play of the card game, but only with a preset deck. I'm hoping that the prospect of choosing every card to be in your deck will be enticing, but I may also add extra modes of play (such as tournament or survival).
