Lame but curious FFXI question

Hey, I used to play final fantasy XI, but realized paying for semi amounts of fun isnt too cool. and yeah i understand the whole procedure as to whey we dont have private servers.
but i was wondering, you know how WoW has a "Trial" offered, And they say that works by having you "Stream' your character into their servers.
What is it exactly that lets them stream the character file from you computer into the world, that we couldnt just force feed a character into a FFXI server by saving character data on our computers?

client <-> server model

server: is the master
client: is the server's bitch.

you're the client. you cannot force the server to do anything it doesn't want to do.  e.g. if you haven't authorized with the pol login server the ffxi server isn't going to respond to your requests.
