IS it just me or have the rest of you heard "stop playing those useless video games" or variations thereof a thousand damn times. I'm sick of it. Video games are not useless. They can do a lot of things for people. For one thing they can increase hand eye coordination. For another thing video games teach problem solving skills Which are some of the most important skills a person can have. What do you people think?

If you know what's best for you, video gamers are in great demand in the mining industry or remote controlling occupations such as operating cranes, drills, and other machinery.

Lol wut?
they can increase hand eye coordination
I've been playing counter strike and quake 3 for ages - I must be quite a marksman with a gun. I've clock thousands of hours on formula one games - I must be a professional race car driver.
video games teach problem solving skills
Game designers design games that don't require a lot of brain power to solve. Most gamers are idiots and cry when they get to a puzzle that requires more cognitive ability than mouse jerking.

The only thing you can get from those sorts of games are theoretical knowledge. Bashing a keyboard is no substitute for practising on the real thing.

OMG i completely agree! My problem solving skills are second to none!!
Especially when I'm trying to get into a locked door. All I need to do is search the surrounding area for a color coordinated key.
Or when I need to get somewhere, I can easily run up beside a moving car, open the door, kick/punch the person inside, and its smooth sailing to my destination.
Any items that would ever be of any use to me are always floating a few inches above the ground, rotating slowly.
When I talk to random people I have never seen before in my life, they always tell me something useful or interesting. If I'm lucky, they occasionally give me clues about a goal that I have in mind.
I can walk into people's houses and rummage through their barrels/crates looking for useful things and they don't mind.
wow, gaming has really taught me a lot and been good for my life!

games give life to our imagination with out them how are we suppose th express ourselves
The solitary man who devoted his soul to the way of games
Today, he comes again
He will punish those who do not play seriously
Their battered bodies will never forget!
[chorus] Segata Sanshiro, Segata Sanshiro! Sega Saturn... shiro!
They play tennis, sing karaoke, flirt around in clubs...
Are there not more serious tasks to be done?
Those who cannot have fun outside of groups
He questions them deep inside their hearts
Segata Sanshiro, Segata Sanshiro! Sega Saturn... shiro!
(voice of Segata)
Youngsters... is there something in your life you are completely devoted to? Something you sink into so deeply you put your life on the line? You must play Sega Saturn! Play... until your fingers break! Until your fingers break!
Even if they chase after sex, that petty pleasure
They're only spending years of emptiness
Those who do not immerse themselves to the extreme in gaming
He will tear them apart!
Segata Sanshiro, Segata Sanshiro! Sega Saturn... shiro!
The white clouds floating on the great blue sky
And the boiling red bloodshed in fierce gaming
Those who give up halfway through
Their battered bodies will never forget!
Segata Sanshiro, Segata Sanshiro! Sega Saturn... shiro!
Segata Sanshiro, Segata Sanshiro! Sega Saturn... shiro!

The overall point of video games is to have fun. Sinse when is fun pointless? At least if a person is playing video games, he's not out on the streets doing drugs. He's doing drugs at home, and then playing some video games.
I think a video-gameless world would get worse before it got better.

Video games aren't useless. Just look at the Wii and the NDS, many games on these consoles provide useful skills, and even games on the PS3/XBox increase hand-eye co-ordination and, generally, problem-solving abilities. Although, arguably, the more violent games can tend to glamourise weaponry, which, I suppose, can especially be a problem in the USA. However, in general they do good.

For me video games server as a tool of fun, and more importantly escapism.

the problems that you find in most games are usually easy to solve. designers have to make it that way as people tend to get frustrated. only true puzzle games, such as sokoban, contribute to problem solving skills.
