Save your game at every step, and make sure you have an escape route if too many enemies are in the room, even the S enemies can kill you if you aren't prepared.  Mid level is tough as the computer throws trolls and other monsters just when you feel you're doing great, and of course the looming threat of low rations and spoiled rations doesn't help.  I recommend you get a dog.
