So what is it then?  Your starting to sound like those critics who says something is provacitive.  Not alot of people understand that word, or even know it is mostly misused.

I don't want to know if the story is decent or not, I said I wanted details and I don't want to buy the game and feel stupid for the probability of throwing my money away.

Here's a rundown of what I know about the Halo universe:
* The Forerunners are a technologically advanced non-human civilization. They live life and create technology and do whatever.
* A parasite of some sort enters the Halo galaxy and start to spread. They are referred to as the flood because of the nature of their infection rate.
* The Forerunners build a collection of Halo structures for the purpose of studying the parasite and as containment for the spread of the parasite when it gets out of control. Activating the Halo structures would contain the growth of the parasite by depriving them of their food source - that is "killing all sentient life" within the galaxy.
* The forerunners decide that the parasite's spread was beyond their control and so implemented protocols to contain the spread. The protocol was basically to move somewhere else (the great journey) and activate the Halo structures (the purification). All sentient life within the Galaxy die by the Halos. The parasite is deprived of their food source and their method of reproduction.
* The descendants of the Forerunners live on. The Forerunners promise salvation from the parasite to their descendants through the containment protocols. The ancestors call themselves 'the Covenant' after the Forerunner's promises.
* The Covenant somehow causes the parasite to spread. The Covenant start the great journey but need to find the Halos.
* Humans develop feasible interstellar travel and colonize the galaxy. The humans start the SPARTAN project to help deal with any military conflict. Humans and the Covenant discover each other. The Covenant war with the humans (I don't know why). The Covenant kick human butt.
* Humans and the Covenant discover the first Halo (Installation 04). The Halo 1 story begins here.

That's basically the story of the Halo universe up to Halo 1. I've left out tons of trivial detail. The Halo wikia site is probably the best non-official Halo resource we have. You can find tons of Halo trivia there http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page .

All that detail makes up for a plausibly interesting story. If you view Halo shallowly though, Halo is yet another shooter with aliens and zombie-like parasites futuristic weapons. This is why I say the difference between Halo and other shooters is the story.

Glad to see a true fanboy who can give answers.  Indeed, the combined concept of the old "space parasites" idea and the old "Zombie parasite" idea works well.  Plus, it allows to gives high level of understanding with the story.  However, it really isn't all that unique.  Not trying to be too critical, but I have actually seen this formula used once in a black and white scifi horror film.  Good movie imo, despite the obviously craptastic costume.  Also, there was more of a brain control thing than a zombie thing.

I'll read the wiki further to see if I am wrong in anyway.  I want to see if there is something ultra original with the story or if alot of what is said from one and two is misleading.  After all, another possibility could be that the covenant actually attacked the humans because the humans accidentally, or purposely in a stupid way, released long dormant Flood cells.  The latter story is possible when thinking about that one ending on Halo 2.

Well, read through quite a bit on the Flood.  I was both right and wrong in my assumptions.  Though, it is kind of making the game look less like following the story right.  I mean, If the Covenant, Humans, and the Flood really are having a three way fight, then it makes no sense for the Covenant to be so focused on fighting the Humans, despite the presence of the Flood.  And the suits the Covenant wear don't seem to be well enough to protect against the Flood, if the Flood can physically infect.  Then again, perhaps I should read further into what happened in the gas mines to get the answer.

This is the fun part of determining if a game's single player is good.  The disection of everything that the hype of a popular one is built on.

So far, the story seems far less interesting than even the mildly interested people I talked to have mentioned.  I'll be back much later, since it looks like there is alot to read.

So the story elements are unoriginal. It does well enough as a foundation as a plausible futuristic alien shooter. Halo as a whole may not be unique or particularly outstanding, it does manage to convey an adequately interesting enough experience if you don't just treat it as yet another shooter. That is what I like about the game; if not for the detail in the back story, it truly does become just another shooter.

Halo is a good game. I'm not an huge Halo fanboy, in fact I only own Halo: Combat Evolved for PC. I just think the game is fun, although bungie needs to get their shit together with the PC ports. Even with its technical downfalls, Halo managed to create both excellent single-player and multi-player game modes, which is quite rare in today's market. The campaign mode had a simple enough story to follow, even if the levels got a little repetetive, and the ending is one of the best I've yet seen - it resolves the first game, but sets the game up perfectly for a sequel.

This is the guy who is deconstructing and analyzing Halo.  I will wait till I play the game in all modes so I can complete my analyses.  I still think it is generic, but whatever.  Who knows, I may find that I am wrong.  However, even seeing others play it, I felt less and less interested in it.

I won't be back for a while.  So don't be shocked if I come out of know where to make a thorough review, unbiased and unaffected by the fad.  I always see both the good and bad in a game, which is why a description from me can be trusted.

Halo IS fairly par in some respects - for instance, the singleplayer campaign was horribly repetitive. However, I still thought that they balanced everything really well.

Halo is only the shit cause it had the best multiplayer action to ever come out on console.

Halo is above average, I starting playing in 2001 and I've watched the series improve over the years, and it has certainly put itself ahead of most fps games. With forge and saved films, it's atleast worth the price of admision, if you don't want to play, don't. I liek it moar den mudkipz.
