My first Square game was Mario RPG, and I adored it - it was actually my first RPG if you don't count A Link to the Past. The new RPG Mario games piss me off because they basically cockblock any chance of a true sequel now that Square is on decent terms with Nintendo again.
A year or so later, I rented FFVII and a PlayStation because my brother said it was like Mario RPG. Though I was a Gamesharkfag (because I was 10), I actually bought my PSX for this game alone.
Since I loved 7, I thought I'd try 8. What the fuck is this shit? Nothing made any fucking sense. I hardly got out of the school or whatever that thing was.
I liked the look of Chrono Cross. The game was fun, but I have never finished it. I don't like the idea of so many characters. I plan to finish it this summer.
X was better than 8, but not worth finishing. The voices ruined the role playing for me. This is where I think they lost their way. X focused more on the aesthetics instead of the gameplay itself.
XI was stupid. I played the free month and left. Like most MMORPGs, unless you have friends who play too, it doesn't make it easy to find a party. Why do they need things like bizarre link shell system?
XIII looks more like the cyberpunk aspect of VII. But it won't be on the 360 until 2025. Square long ago fell into the same trap as many, many other developers: overproduction and unnecessary changes.
Based on reviews of DQ8 (me and #20 must have read the same ones), it sounds like they took the time to polish old concepts. FF, on the other hand, tries to throw in the most batshit insane gameplay mechanics. They are confusing radical change with successful innovation.
Materia made a lot of sense to me, even when I was 10. Later, I understood the nuances of the system. Why do we need complicated shit like the infamous junction system or just unnecessary ways to upgrade like in FFX? Something like the link shells and all that did not make FFXI's immersive - it made the game less accessible.
Square just has a big head. Its games sell because people have their hopes up for the next [insert your favorite Square game here]. They are meritless today. Not only are they living off hopes for new games, they are milking the games they got right, the ones being remade.
The company seems to be trying to regain the acclaim they had 10 years ago. I believe their focus is in the wrong place. They keep pushing aspects, methods, and styles they see as the future of the series and genre, but they have failed to look back on what, exactly made their earlier games so well-received and FUN.

Square is coming out with a shoot 'em up game for the Xbox 360 which is clearly practice for making/ porting more involved games like Final Fantasy.
The 360 is quickly becoming a haven for solid JRPGs. RPGs traditionally don't need the most powerful hardware, so why deal with the PS3's complicated programming? It makes more sense to use the system on which it's simpler to program these decades-old mechanics.
Apparently the extended development time is worth it to Square. While other RPG developers pump out games, Square's main franchise is riding on one hit-or-miss game. They could learn from themselves - all their smaller games for other systems are what is funding FFXIII.

@__@ Nobody mentioned gimmicks. You forgot to mention gimmicks. It's like every magic/ limit break/ upgrade/ battle system has to be different instead of useful or easy or fun.
The only ones I liked were FF Crystal Chronicles, FF 4-6 (although I didn't beat those 3), Super Mario RPG, and Kingdom Hearts.
There's a reason why Final Fantasy is what brought them from their grave, because they've always sucked, and they finally got something almost right. If the MSX and PC-98 made it to U.S. shores first, these fuckers would be long dead by now.
Their fucking Jax/Mortal Kombat rip-off Barett in FF VII shouldn't even have any glory. Nigger with metal on his arms...
