I was so sad when they merged with Enix. Enix was supposed to be the dominant company and now it's still just Square pretty much. Enix was the better company even before they moved too. Anyone who loves Final Fantasy has Dragon Quest to thank for it even existing. Then again, Final Fantasy is shit anymore and yet the last Dragon Quest game was awesome.

FF:TSW is the reason why Square bombed and lost money. Then, they merged with Enix, no doubt to make up for the money loss. Now Enix has Square by the neck, riding on the back of the name Final Fantasy, re-releasing games up to FOUR TIMES (I'm looking at you, Final Fantasy 4), and giving fans so much FF7 that they'll come back to lick their shoes for more.
Square made a mistake with their movie. But they made an even bigger mistake merging with Enix. Well... in their Pocketbooks, they would think they've won. WE ALL KNOW THE TRUTH!

I have always found it strange that I've played a good number of RPG's here and there (and completed most of them), but I've never actually beaten a FF, but I've played a majority of FF7, and I can say that it's mostly "okay", and is not the greatest RPG ever. I plan on getting some of the Dragon Quest (and related) games some time soon, after reading reviews of DQ8, and being said to be one of the best RPG's ever created.
I agree with your complaints, but Star Ocean (not sure which one(s)) is coming to the PSP in some form, but I'm not thinking anything new. Although, there's this recent announcement you may find interesting (I despise IGN, but they typically don't lie): http://ps3.ign.com/articles/787/787044p1.html

I say to hell with FF. The first couple were good, and Dragon Quest was awesome in its day, but I think the best game out there is the Prince of Persia line. It's got awesome moves that you can't do in any other game and the landscapes are fuckin' phenomenal.

Drama to Go
Despite a few GBA quirks, Final Fantasy IV Advance is a great version of an RPG milestone. The story seems a bit simplistic by today's standards, but it's also uncommonly charming. The quicksave feature makes it an excellent candidate for fun on the go... assuming you can hold back the tears when yet another beloved character sacrifices themselves for the good of the world while you're playing on the train to work. Such an outburst might earn you some odd looks from your neighbors, but hey, this is one game that's worth a little embarrassment.

Though each game is showing its age a bit, the combined package is still worthwhile for old-school RPG fans and patient neophytes.
The Good: Two lengthy RPGs for the price of one; bonus content; ability to save anywhere.
The Bad: Old-school RPG mechanics; frequent random battles; port of a port of a port that’s showing its age.
