I dunno why, but I went to finally buy one, and now they're scarce again. Is there a reason to own it outside of it being a cheap Blu-Ray player all of a sudden?

If you need anyone to give you even the slightest push towards buying one, then of course not.
As far as being a "cheap" BRD player, enjoy owning a first-gen player that will suck royally compared to players that will cost less than half as much in two years. Anyone who bought a PS2 in 2001 as a "cheap" DVD player was just wasting money on a crappy interlaced player with horrible qicture quality that just helped to shorten the life of their PS2's laser. (When playing games, the laser isn't always active, but it's always active when watching movies.)
The ONLY good reason to buy a console is for the games, and all the current PS3 games are shit. I'm not being biased; it might be worth whatever it's going for next year, when it actually has any sort of good games for it. And if you don't like the games on the other consoles, don't buy them either.
It seems like this should be so obvious.

OP here, the reason I'm getting a PS3 is because for reasons outside of my control I no longer have a PS2, but I'd still like to play my games. Buying a PS2 which I will inevitably upgrade to a PS3 eventually seems foolish, especially since Sony stated that price drops are very far off. I have a 360 and a Wii because the games are fun.

Still, are there even any PS3 games you want to play or BRD movies you want to watch?
Of course Sony is saying "no price drops soon." What else would they say? Just remember that you can now buy a PSP cheaper than anyone bought one at launch because of the "Value Pack" bullshit.
BTW, if my PS2 broke, I'd replace it with another modded PS2 because of rumble, custom arcade joysticks, all my other non-standard PS/PS2 controllers and the games that use them, and downloaded games. If my Cube broke, I'd replace it with another Cube because of my GameBoy Player, even though I have a Wii. If my Xbox broke, I'd replace it with another modded Xbox because of emulators, xvid, and downloaded games.
Whatever, it's not my money. Buy one and love it. But then why ask for reasons to own one? Don't you know?

I was asking for reasons why they are out of stock, really. Actually someone I know pointed out that everyone got a bunch of tax returns, which explains the rush on this shit.

Oh yeah, I do wanna get Crank and Full Metal Jacket on BRD, and I frequent the video store often, so being able to rent the HD versions of new movies would be cool.

The stores in my area have 5 PS3's in stock at least at any given time.
They're sold out of Wii's, and X-Box 360's aer usually in stock (but not always).

Hey does anyone know if Yellow Dog Linux on a PS3 lets you watch videos and play emulators? Also is it possible to stream the videos from a WinXP machine? That would be the shit...
