I dunno why, but I went to finally buy one, and now they're scarce again. Is there a reason to own it outside of it being a cheap Blu-Ray player all of a sudden?

If you need anyone to give you even the slightest push towards buying one, then of course not.
As far as being a "cheap" BRD player, enjoy owning a first-gen player that will suck royally compared to players that will cost less than half as much in two years. Anyone who bought a PS2 in 2001 as a "cheap" DVD player was just wasting money on a crappy interlaced player with horrible qicture quality that just helped to shorten the life of their PS2's laser. (When playing games, the laser isn't always active, but it's always active when watching movies.)
The ONLY good reason to buy a console is for the games, and all the current PS3 games are shit. I'm not being biased; it might be worth whatever it's going for next year, when it actually has any sort of good games for it. And if you don't like the games on the other consoles, don't buy them either.
