So far anonymous has provided terrible excuses for not liking final fantasy vii.

RE: Kiddy Graphics.
If Anonymous was truly an avid gamer, this wouldn't effect his decision on whether or not the game was any good.

RE: Shitty Gameplay.
Not really, I think the 6 million user playerbase disagrees. Tedious? yes. Shitty? Not really.

RE: Other RPGs are better.
There are no free-to-play RPGs that are better than final fantasy vii, and there likely never will be hamlet = pre-Fail. legend of dragoon = Fail. vagrant story = Mega Fail. xenogears = Hyper Fail. final fantasy viii = Epic Fail.

RE: You're paying for an RPG game.
Its other peoples money, they can do what they like with it.

It stands to reason that one of the following things is true:

Anonymous tried final fantasy vii but it was too hard for him ;_;
Anonymous didn't like the story ;_;
Anonymous is too much of a lazy broke-ass faggot to get a job and pay for it.
Anonymous is just your typical whiny average 4chan browsing sampfag with a negative attitude but /b/ won't listen to him because he's just plain stupid.

So far, Anonymous' reason for hating final fantasy vii: Fail.

Other RPG's do have better and far more fleshed-out stories and aren't nearly as flat-out buggy-to-death.

And as much as you may disagree, there are other RPG's released in the past ten years that are better.  I suggest you stop living in the past and welcome the new millenium.

did it hurt to pull that much out of your ass? i liked the game myself, but wtf do you care what other people think about it? if you liked it cool dude. lol

"Gamer" is a fucking retarded term.

Does it matter how many people vote for something? If a majority agrees on something, does that automatically "magically" make it right or good or "the best"? Fuck no it doesn't.

SaGa games are better then ff. Because SaGa isn;t influenced by stagnated DnD 20+ year old bullshit.

SaGa has, no levels, no classes. And has different methods of character progression. And some SaGas dont use random encounters.

If you continue to support a product which doesn't deserve money, it will continue to be profitable and continue to pull the same shit.

God you're a fag.

Just because -you- couldn't comprehend someone elses reasons, doesn't justify -you- the right to just coin your own. Not to mention you probably talked to only 5 people about their views on ff7 (lol)

FF7 was the beginning of the end. It opened the flood gates for square to milk their own "new" demographic. The demographic that wasn't around for the nes or snes era. With non-playable expensive visuals as their main selling point.

They created their own monopoly, it's every companies wet dream. And in the process, killed the console rpg genre. Since it's gone to shit in the past 6 years.

the only thing interesting about FFVII was that it was the first FF in 3d, that makes it overrated

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-05 15:34

FFVII was the first FF game with unreliable narrator.
FFVII was the  first FF game where crucial plot points are revealed in optional scenes.
FFVII was a major step up in story complexity over previous FF games.
FFVII was full of ambiguity.
FFVII had very bad translation.
All these combined mean many people completed the game without understanding it, and nerds continue to debate the finer points even now.  This is the reason for FFVII's enduring popularity.

I tend to agree.  It was a decent game in its own right -- coming from someone who hadn't played earlier FF games at the time, anyway -- but I do think it's overrated.  I completely fail to understand all the fanboys (and fangirls, too) who obsess over Cloud and Sephiroth.  I can think of many, _many_ characters (video games or otherwise) far more interesting than those two.

And as for 3D... maybe it was a revolution at the time, but frankly, it was premature IMO.  There's nothing wrong with sprites.  Later sprite-based games like La Pucelle (and the more widely known sequel, Disgaea) look fantastic by comparison to FF7.  I'd take good sprites over bad 3D any day.  And the "it's a new technology, cut it some slack" excuse is just lame -- if you can't do it well with new technology, then do it well with the old stuff.

Frankly, I barely finished it as is.  Not for difficulty, but for boredom.  I liked it well enough, but even I have my limits for repetition.

Plus, the numbers mean nothing.  If popularity was proportional to quality, then a lot of good game studios would still be in operation, and publishers like EA Games would have adapted or died long ago.  Numbers only prove that the right marketing can successfully extract tons of money from the general public.  Sometimes they get what they paid for, and sometimes they just get what they deserve.

Actually, a dude in /v/ some time back summed-up FFVII's story quite nicely:

Jenova (a horrid misspelling of Jehova), was an alien from space who liked to munch on Life Streams, which all living planets contain.  When she arrived on (The Planet?  I wonder why they never named their planet...) via Meteor, she seriously scarred-up the place.  When the nomadic Cetra (who liked to build huge stone cities then wander off in search of their Promised Land) went to investigate, they discovered her and believed her to be a God due to her powers (hence her name—Jehova = God in some religions).  But Jenova decides that the Cetra pose a danger to her plans of turning the Planet into a Milkshake (planning on using the energies released to suckle her supple form) so she uses her SPACE MAGIC!!! to create a virus to kill the Cetra.  The remaining Cetra realize their God is a Bitch, so they create Holy and eventually succeed in sealing-up Jenova...though they can't kill her.  In the mean time, The Planet gets pissy about Jenova trying to turn it into a Milkshake and creates WEAPONS to fight her...which may or may not have aided the Cetra.

In the end, Jenova is dug-up 4000(?) years later, Gast & Hojo do some freaky experiments on it and totally screw-up the history of Jenova (thinking its an ancient Ancient), Gast learns the truth from Aerith's mom (Elmyra?  Or was that the other one) but gets shot the fuck-up by SHINRA troops after he goes A.W.O.L. and fathers Aerith.

Meanwhile, Hojo extracts some DNA from Jenova and injects it into the Fetus Sephiroth (who was the father and apparently married to Lucrestia, though Vincent had a major hard-on for her which Hubby Hojo objected to and subjected to nasty experiments as well).  Sephy is born with dramatic fighting potential but a pathetically weak mind, goes batshit insane when he mistakenly learns some of his DNA was mixed with an Ancient (Jenova), rips his "mommy's" head off for some pervy reason I’m sure, but then gets killed by Cloud.  Jenova (Surprise!  Not dead!) decides to use his form to either disguise herself or as mental projections to lead Cloud around by the balls to free the REAL Sephiroth, whom she used to continue her DEVIOUS PLOT to turn The Planet into a Milkshake.  But Sephiroth gets killed, the Planet decides to NOT to kill all of humanity (possibly due to Aerith's influence), Jenova's head is still floating around in the Lifestream, and eventually something happens 500 years later (or less) that leads The Planet to turn all of humanity into Nanaki rip-offs (Source: From the creators themselves in interviews)...which may or may not have been what Jenova turned the Cetra into with that virus of hers (creating the wolf-like creatures to begin with).

Which means Hojo wasn't a total perv, and because Red XIII and Aerith had similar origins (both of Ancient/Cetra blood), they could have bred.

really, why does someone NOT liking something matter so much as to go berzerk when it's mentioned?

I liked the game too, when it first came out, but I outgrew it, after the first 3 times beating it, and when I beat the weapons.
(god that took forever for me to figure out, at the time)

then, after I got my comp, and the net a year ago...

well obssesive doesn't BEGIN to describe some ff fans.
but it's like everywhere I went involving games, there were hundreds of people raving about ffvii, obssesing over it.
anyone who didn't think it was a game from god, was flamed to hell and back.
and no, I don't mean those who insulted it, even those who liked it, and moved on were considered "the enemy"...

wtf?

this in turn created many who trash the game, just because they are sick of hearing about it. now not everyone who hates the game falls into this group, but anyone who said they didn't like the game was put in it anyway.
because god forbid someone doesn't like what they do.

but why would that matter so much? if you enjoyed the game, what others say wouldn't matter.
why does taste have to be uniform...

or are you going to claim that that's not it at all, and say everyone BUT you, and those like you, just have no taste, hence simply proving my point?

it's along the lines of people forcing themselves to like caviar, for the sole reason of saying that "their refined tastes are what prove them to be superior"...
yes there ARE people that enjoy it, but to claim that liking certain things is what matters, as opposed to who you are. that's just ridiculous, and delusional.

I am NOT trying to bad mouth those who genuinly enjoy the game to this day, but really, the e-pissing contest goes too far.

I don't hate FFVII, it's one of my favourite console RPGs, I just prefer other RPGs to it. I think anyone who's obsessed with one game to the point where they think anything else sucks probably has no life (yes, I do realise the irony of someone posting on 4chan telling someone to get a life). What I'm saying is, there's lots of other good RPG's and video games out there and FFVII is only one of them.

Also, people have the right to not like a game/movie/book/band/whatever you really enjoy - it's how the world works, you'll have to get over the fact that people have differing opinions and aren't going to be persuaded by you flaming them.

One that likes f77
One that likes any other game which instantly = better than f77

There are two types of people in the world
One that is inferior
One that is pretty cool

There are two types of people in the world
One that doesn't know what the hell a videogame is
One that has actually played as well as comprehends the premise of videogames at any point in their lived lives

There are two types of people in the world
