guitar hero controller

so I bought guitar hero off my friend for dirt cheap (like 20 bucks). Only thing is he's a bit rough on his toys - so while the guitar LOOKS like its not damaged at all, the wire at the base has something wrong with it. I have to twist and pull the wire just to get the ps2 to recognize it. (keeps saying I'm rocking to hard, heh)

I was wondering if it'd be worth it to try and cut the wire in 2 places and reattach it - hopefully cutting out the problem area. If any of you have any suggestions (or maybe even links to online guides) of how to repair my gitaroo I'd appreciate it.

is it the part of the wire that comes out of the guitar, or at the plug?
