Hi kids! Do you remember the gameboy? Yes, that bulky grey beast. Let me tell you youngins a story from my childhood.
Actually, I'm thinking of picking up a gameboy for some oldschool gaming out in the sun and need some tips for games. Essential games for gameboy.
I'm already planing to get the following: Tetris, Zelda: Link's awakening and Mystic Quest, if I can find it. I have my eye on Wario Land too but I can't recall if it was any good. I'm pretty sure I'm missing a bunch of great games so help me out!

If you like Pokemon, get the original RBY version.
Damn straight. The first Kirby's Dreamland is an excellent way to kill a hour.
Plus the Kirby pinball game was tits. Especially the soccer mini game :DD

Wario land is a very excellent game, the entire series is fucking legendary and a bit obscure in terms of mainstream acceptance.
Mario Land 2
Kirby's Block ball AND pinball land

Final Fantasy Legend 1 was awesome.
You could do stupid things like killing the last boss with the Saw (which happened to be a one-hit kill weapon) :D

I remember playing Final Fantasy Legend 2 or was it 3? I dunno, but I played it over and over... until... there was a bug that wouldn't let me progress in story. It was a sad day. A sad day indeed.

Kirby Dreamland 1 and 2 are definately worth picking up, along with kirby's pinball land. i don't know about tilt n tumble, but it's probably worth it too

There are some good Tennis and Golf games, christ if I can remember.
Also get one of those 50-in-1 unlicenced carts, just because they always have a few great old school games.

Tilt n Tumble is not bad, however it is GBC only.
How could I have forgotten to mention the original SaGa's, boy I suck.
Also, the first seiken densetsu aka FF adventure, which is better than all the shameful sequels that followed.
Since someone mentioned one of the greatest games ever that I neglected to mention (on accident) I'll give a more indepth list.
Bomberman Quest, it may be gbc only, I don't think so though, it has a soundtrack that is among one of the best bomberman arrangements ever, right u there with bomberman 64 and bomberman hero.
Fist of the north star, portable hokuto fighting with leveling, not bad music either.
The original Gargoyle's Quest, firebrand fucking dominates your soul forever, guaranteed.
The GB megaman games aren't bad.
Technically Metroid 2 isn't bad, personally I didn't like it too much, same with the NES metroid.
Pop n Twinbee, fucking twinbee motherfucker, enough said.
Battle Arena Toshinden, not a bad fighter, at least in my opinion.
Sagaia, because Darius is better than you.
Mystical Ninja, BECAUSE.
Mercenary Force.
The prequels to the amazing Operation Logic bomb, fortified zone and ikari no yousai 2.
There's even a tetris attack on gb, if you're willing to settle for a substitute to the original's badassery for the sake of portability on Z80.

I'm mostly scouring a relatively small auction site so it's hard to find all titles but I've got a nice list going. So far I've found the following.
Super Mario Land 2
Zelda: Link's Awakening
Tetris
Kid Icarus
Kirby's Dreamland
Warioland
Mystic Quest
I'll probably pick up Pokemon, Mario Picross, one of the Megamans and possibly one of the Donkey Kong Land games, they should be decent atleast
I'm a bit unsure about Castlevania Adventure, Double Dragon and Duck Tales.
The games that can't be found right now will rpobably turn up sooner or later but this should last me a while. Thanks for all the recommendations so far!

Castlevania Adventure is horrible, get CVII:Belmont's Revenge instead
