Meaningful murder.

With most games the purpose is to kill everyone in sight, but with games like Hitman, Metal Gear Sold, or Splinter Cell they request you avoid killing unnecessarily and place much more importance on your actual mission. There is also Way of the Samurai, which in many instances pits you against a single enemy in a single long battle rather than 100 enemies in 100 battles.

I'm not looking for a stealth or shooting game in particular, but something that bases your purpose around a single or very few kills rather than an infinite rush of nobodies whose deaths are worth nothing.

I desire something like this because I'm tired of killing for no reason. For instance, if you played a game where simply moving around killed things, would that still carry satisfaction and fun? The afterknowledge of having earned the kill and the kill have progressed you in your mission is as much a part of gameplay as the kill itself.

In summary: I want to feel as if I am killing more than just another sprite.

That gets the singularity of the kill right, but the enemies are monsters and lack humanity. That is what I am looking for, in particular. Metal Gear Solid captures the humanity of an enemy's life by giving them real voices, showing their emotion and fear, their names, and even their personalities at time.

Now that I describe that, I think of Knights of the Old Republic and Deus Ex, where giving you the ability to kill anyone you like also gave you the responsibilities carried with that ability and the reality of taking a life.

You could try Fallout 1 or 2...  while it's certainly possible to go through these games just butchering everything in sight (and a few things that arent if you use the right/wrong weapon), it's also entirely possible to work through the games with an almost entirely stealth-based approach, or to work through diplomacy.

Or you can become a violent and psychopathic mass-murderer, killing everyone you see, like in Morrowind.  You'll become irreversibly evil, but if you're going to kill everyone you probably won't worry about this much.

Did Planescape allow you to do anything ultra-bad? I can't remember, my copy has been dead for about a year.

You can kill civilians, but really important NPCs will break the plot and end the game.  Killing enough of the Lady's servants in town will make her show up and destroy you.

Don't change these.
