First, there is alreaddy a tread about spore, you didn't need to create a new one. But anyway, I don't mind. I'm going to rewrite mi thoughts here in the hope that someone will prove me wrong:

I had time to think about it, and I found that spore suffers from 1 major flaw:
At the city stage, you loose all control over your creatures. They become stuck inside the town, you cannot tell them to get out and explore anymore. After spending the whole game creating them, evolving them, all of a sudden they become nothing more than part of the scenery inside of your cities. That’s just plain stupid! At this point, you should be able to equip them with lazer guns and rocket launchers, and build yourself an army of infantry, to go kick the ass of those invading thanks 10 to 1. When I invade an other planet, I should be able to attack the inhabitants with lazer wielding dinosaur space marines!

It's kind of the same thing for the weapons. Before the city stage, you evolve your "clan" of creatures by giving them better weapons (and other stuff) to be better equipped to kick the asses of the enemy clans. So you go (I'm guessing here...) from spear, to sword, to powder gun, to machine gun, and when you finally get that lazer gun you’ve been dreaming about, you also get enough points to go to the city stage and BAM!, no more weapons!. All you achieved for your individual creatures just disappeared. Sure, you can now build tanks, and planes... But I find it kinda lame that all the features you worked for in the earlier stages of the game only serves to get you to the later ones... well kinda.
