Zombie MMO

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-07 17:00

this thread isn't really for a particular game that exists, just wishfull thinking of what one would like to have included. here are a few quotes from /b/

"I think that a game called Surprise Zombie Attack would be the best!
No fuckin' hero.
Pick your character in their everyday life.
Suddenly. SURPRISE ZOMBIE ATTACK!
You don't have ninja skills. You don't know how to shoot a gun (unless you choose a Black or Character who grew up in the South).
And ALL of the environment is interactive!
You fatigue!
You can pick up rocks and throw them at zombies!
Mission?
Survive...
End game?
LOL Like hell."

"it would be like playing GTA with only close combat weapons and no missions... "

"This one. Your character doesn't know shit about fighting zombies. Try picking up a long stick and whack the zombie to death "

"i'm saying that no zombie game can even compare to ZOMBIES ATE MY NEIGHBORS, and stuff like "fatigue" just take away from the zombie fragging action "

"I was aiming for the more realistic factor such as if you run up a hill, it will take zombies longer to climb up a slope.
Also everyone would go about their normal days unknowing of this until it actually effects them.
Overtime, days, the highways will be blockaded with abandonned cars. etc. "

"They're making a game already almost like that. Except you can't chppse your character. I think it's called Stay Alive or something like that. Not the new one with Frankie Munez but another one... I can't fucking remember it. "

"Thats what zombie game should be about. SURVIVAL. Not killing everything in sight. Thats why i love Resident Evil and hate Dead rising. "

"I'm thinking MMO survival horror game. No NPCs to sell you shit, no money, no inns, no market, non of that rpg shit. just you, and maybe three or four thousand other terrified players per server/town. and maybe 10,000 zombies. you start of with nothing, maybe a pocket knife and a flash light, and the whole town is destructible/interactive. need a weapon? how bout busting up that chair and using one of its legs? hell, use the whole chair as a club! No healing or rezZing shit either. If you die, you naturally become infected, in which case you have too options: continue playing as a zombie, or start a new human character. of course, zombies would have to be slower to make up for their incredible endurance, but it could still be fun to continue as the living dead. "

"It would be near impossible to balance though without increasing the zombie numbers drastically. "

"Can there be a level system?
I mean...a zombie can evolve into a lich king right?
You'd have to add more disabilities like when you select to attack a human, you get tunnel vision.
and humans. the more they use weapons, the more accustomed they come to using them. such as guns.
and zombie players need the innate ability to have a sensor that goes off if a player makes a sound "

"back in the day i played a game called subspace (like a mulitplayer asteroids)

but anyway, there were occasionally special events that the community threw. one halloween we did jsut that. we started everyone off with a nice fast nimble ship. and one zombie. who was slow. and heavily armed, but short range. basically you could run away from it.

the catch is, when anyone died they'd become a zombie, so well. eventually you make a mistake. get too close. and die. and soon enough it was 100 zombies, and a handfull of live players. "

"Humans would naturaly become accustomed to the weapon type they use most, however it wouldn't be a persistant world per se. eventually zombies win, IE infection rate of say... 95%. that way nobody has to wait for the game ot end while zombies track down the last uninfected person loggout out in a closet.

Zombies probably would be static, or maybe even diminishing levels. IE, if somebody hacks of your arm, your attack is at half speed/power. Zombies wouldn't use complex weapons, but it would take a heal of alot to bring them down. once you're killed or incapacitated (IE Monty Python's Black Knight), you rez as a human or zombie again, so it would probably take about a month to clear a server of humans. after a month the same town would get boring anyway. "

"This thread is relevant to my paranoia."

"I still think a Naruto MMO would be more interesting
Need to put more thought into it.
Rezzing? ehhhh no.
I can see it as if you come in ANY contact with a zombie, you're infected and you have a timer to when you turn into a zombie.
throw in some Clock Tower 3 PARANOIA vision for Humans and we have a decent game. "

"Overall...we need better zombie games
DID SOMEONE SAY ZOMBIES ATE MY NEIGHBORS FOR THE 360?!"

"Anyone wanna help me make HL2 mod of what we're discussing? "

"good idea. only i'd put all players on a timer, and increase the rate based off proximity and contact with a zombie. a person who gets backsplashed by a zombie after emptying both barrels of a shotgun into it is obviously going to progress faster in his infection then a player who hides and sets traps. Partial Infection would probably intail a boost in health or stamina, but a decrease in speed and sensory data. "

"Thats what i was thinking. Theres a million zombie modes. HOWEVER. People are lazy, things get cut, quit. Thats where the problem is, motavation, and good help. "

"if we make it so everyone has an infection, it won't be an MMO.
If we do that, we'll need to introduce a vaccine that is rare and needs to bosst the time limit. "

"Although not actiony, there is a zombie MMO: www.urbandead.com "

"good point. OK, your infected after coming withing...say 10 meters of a zombie, or 5 meters of another infected person. but there should also be environmental factors. maybe there's a ton of rats in certain areas, those could also spread the infection, but it would take much longer for the timer as its a trans-species infection that needs more time to mutate. I don't think there should be a vaccine, but you should be able to raid medicine cabinets and convenience stores for drugs to amp your character or minimize the effects of mutation. I don't mean NARC style, but just little things to slow the progression of infection or prolong your stamina with caffeine. stuff like that. "

"If we send the infection onto animals, we have to research if it's possible.
If we look at the newly remade Dawn of the Dead, zombies did not attack animals? Why? I think it had to do with their fur or something.
I can see that rats can hold the virus (PLAGUE LOL).
But the ability to be infected simply by comin' within a distance of the zombie is propostorous. If pheromones were the key to spreading the disease, I can understand.
I think any SKIN contact with the zombie would be the best choice.
Take this for example. Guns in this world are rare. Cops have them under lock and they keep them for themselves because they are a tight unity who only protect themselves because they hold power.
SOME people will have to fight hand to hand. some guns are releaed in the world.
we want everything to be a weapin, this includes your Father's Axe you chop wood with in the shed.
People will have to learn to ATTACK run ATTACK run.
If they happen to hit terrain that slows their moving or cornered, thats when the disease will be passed OR if they're outnumbered. "

"ahh, I like this better, good idea. especialy the cop thing. might make interesting NPC's after all. especially if there's a civie vs cop riot ^__^. While i agree the premise should be melee combate, there are alot of opertunities for "1 shot" ranged weapons. Flar guns, molatov cocktails, that pistol sitting in your glove compartment with maybe 4 bullets left that you got after some assholes jacked your car last year... those sort of things. of course, automatic weapons would be next to impossible to aquire, unless say the cheif of police has one or two locked up in an evidence locker."

Problem is, people would enter the game expecting trouble. You need something in the beginning of the game to shock the "lets organize and kick zombie ass" mentality out of players and put them into fear driven survival mode. something new with each server refresh. for example; at the start of a game, the spawn points are in office buildings, where each person spawns in a cubicle ore something. only the power is out, and all but one exit seems to be blocked. it stops becoming a zombie hunt, and becomes more of a group puzzle. this person might spawn with a flash light in his inventor, that person may spawn with a key to a certain door. there would be redundancies of course, in case a person logs off or decides do be an antisocial jackass. the point is you need a distraction, a macguffin. If the player starts ready to charge into battle guns-a-blazen, it quickly suffers from the tedium of FPS, rather what is required is suspense.

I like urbandead, but it does seem to suffer from a lack of zombies in most parts of the game. Like #2 says, good zombie games should be more about survival than blasting the crap out of the zombie horde rambo-style. With the exception of Caiger, UD is becoming rather *non*-scary...

yes, but once you incorporate online companions, the scare factor is diminished immensely. You can compensate with environmental effects and shear numbers, but its still "US vs them" as opposed to "Holy Shit Survive!"

Resident Evil Online?

You could solve this quite easily actually, balancing it so the player SURVIVES will be the hard part. Have it take place in a city where the military has recently blitzed the city to remove VIPs, and left everyone else to stay behind and rot with the undead. The buildings can have sections that'll crumble at random cutting you off from your group, there can be Silent Hillish gaps in the streets from where larger ordinance landed, and damaged grates/gates can be used once only. (Which you can only get back over with a climbing skill or bolt cutters or finding another route.) Strength stat would help too, so's randomly placed item blocks would require the resident strongman to shove out of the way Boxxle style. Without him, can't go around.
Since ideally, zombies and other miscreants of the night would hunt you down, that's where survivability comes in. Computer nerd runs out of ammo while trying to open an electronic garage door and the zombie dogs're closing in? Puppy chow.
Also this game would sorely need zombie cats. Zombie cats need some love dammit. Think about it. Spook a real cat, and it lunges for your FACE. So a zombie cat with exposed ribcage? Ow!

Don't change these.
