I'd like to play again... but I don't want to pay again! I looked around and didn't find any servers for FFXI... do they exist?

It would only make sense if it was adjusted for solo play, because no one else would be on at the same time, and the storyline is just like a single player game (party members in cutscenes can dummies).

No. They're being incredibly tight with FFXI. There aren't and most likely never will be a private server for FFXI.

Assuming the private server can adjust difficulty, then you could easily have single player balance. Mobs would be killed in about 3 hits, levels would be ten times faster, and you'd do more damage. Look at the FFXII demo for an example.
