Hello!Nice to meet you.
I'm a Japanese.
Well...I have a question.
Why the Dragonquest (In America it called DragonWarrior) isn't popular in America?
DragonQuest is most popular RPG in Japan (than finalfantasy).
It's wonder for me.
WHY?
Could you tell me your thinking(opinion?)about it?
Sorry,Poor English.

To each their own, I guess. Sure as hell doesn't float my boat.

The fact that DQVII was responsible for close to 2000 boredom-induced comas didn't really help the series popularity. That's not really what you call starting off on the right foot.

One of the reasons I dont like DQ as much as FF is because they all seem the same.
DQ 1-4 all the same gameplay. I want new things. Change magic system, change battle system.
FF1 and FF2 are so different, then FF3 uses job system, something new and exciting!
………………
DQ has same thing for every game, gets boring.
------------------------------------------------------
DQ2 adds vehicles, DQ3 adds job-change system, DQ4 adds party-change system, medal-collect system and AI auto battle system ,DQ5 can let monsters as you partners, DQ6 use a new job-change system which is similar to FF5's.
How can you make this conclusion "DQ has same thing for every game"?
"Graphics would probably be a good reason." To enjoy those affected love story like FF8 and FF10, I would prefer to play Air.
As FF,the Graphics looks better, the story seems stodgier, maybe.

I am Chinese and I love both the western RPGs and your typical JRPGs, they all have their own user base in here. Though in the north america market, things are a bit more interesting.
From my own observation, it wasn't about CG or what have you, but the promotions Enix(former) had to put into the series back in the SNES days. I dunno about you guys but DQ V and VI are absolute gems(I strongly felt that anyone liked any of the FF games on the SNES, or any 16-bit RPG fan for that matter, would also like them) and it's a shame Enix hasn't done anything with them in the US market, thus missed its biggest chance to establish a considerable fan-base during the golden days.
Then later(much later) we have the "outdated"(no offense) DQ7 finally hit the shores of NA, which at the time the RPG market has become a leftover of Squaresoft's "blockbuster" titles.
I'm not going into more details as you can get the idea: when you think about popularity and stuff, for a long term series it's all about reputation and that connection between the title and its players, which I believe do not exist amongst most of today's american mainstream RPG gamers. Although of course with evolving hardware technologies and growing market it is never too late to start over. And DQ8 english version will definitely hold its merits(hopefully).
some things catch some things dont... that's the way the world works.
sad really...DQ is better in many ways

I liked Dragon Quest...
It's kind of simple, straightforward, and is classic sword and sorcery. It didn't get all stupid like Final Fantasy did by trying to "evolve". I think Final Fantasy 7 was the last FF game I ever actually enjoyed with Final Fantasy 6 being number one with FFIV and FFI following close behind.
When will people learn that simple is best and that you don't need a pretentious, pseudo intellectual story to have a good game. Some people just like a game where you assemble a stout and hearty crew of adventurers and slay dragons and demons. I could not care any less about unrequited loves, government subsidies, blah blah blah.
I no longer want to see bishonen with boyish good looks and androgynous charm. I want to see barbarians, Dark Knights, Dwarves and Elvish beauties. That is what is wrong with RPGs today.
Personally, i dont like japanese RPG's, its too linear, and the character development(gameplay-wise, not storywise) is close to null compared to the western systems.
With games like Morrowind....I really haven't looked to newer JRPGs for my fix lately. But during the late 80s/early 90s Square was the number one name. I remember spending countless hours of my wasted youth building up my ultimate FF party(Fighter, Red Mage, Black Mage, Thief...plz dont' criticize)...or spending hours on end playing FFIV..which had AWESOME music..and FF6...amazing...a rich story...intrigue..secrets..easter eggs...it was an EVENT. And Dragon Quest still gets a lot of play on my GBA....but...
DQ7 just didn't do it for me...neither did any FF after 7...
Now RPGs rely on contrived cinematics and talk talk talk to move the story along...whereas in the older games...it was actually looked forward to for exposition. Now with Morrowind and so on...I make my own adventure. Trust me...my Morrowind guy is NOT a pretty boy bishounen who has an androgynous crush on another bishounen and has an unrequited love....he's an evil Dark Knight with large armor..mods...a broadsword and he summons skeletons and demons....oh yeah..and I infected him with the vampire virus. When JRPGs start doing that again...I will care again. For real...reiterating my earlier statements..but seriously what happened? I used to really care about square, enix, and so on...times change..so do people. Oh yeah and the FF movie was LAME! No sorcery...no actual monsters...no wizards or bards....god...excuse me..I'm gonna go boot up Bard's Tale on my Commie....

Oh, so thats why people disliked the FF movie. Yeah, I understand now... always seemed overly hated to me.
Hate morrowind. Maybe I shouldn't have tried to be a magician... stupid mages guild sending you into level 20 territory...

Well I am sincerely looking forward to the next game by Bethesda. Most of you would already know of Oblivion. They are appealing to the mainstream for certain aspects, those being attributes of Morrowind that it greatly sucked at. My sophmore year of my Univ. years went almost purely to Morrowind. (A blessing and a curse, more of the latter). Morrowind sorely lacked in the magic department and therefore sucked in that regard. My first character was a spellsword, so I had a fair balance of both. As to the next installment, from my occassional checkups on their development progress, it looks like this one will be at least 2x better than Morrowind. Just have to wait and see. What was greatly appealing was the open endedness and the fact that you could do whatever you wanted. Linear games are needed, but the market also needs its fair share of non-linears (that don't suck). What makes gamers happy is that someone sticks to a certain genre/sub-genre and does it RIGHT. Therefore you would have a successful product, and much acclaim to follow in the industry. More acclaim, more capital, and thus a much greater potential for the next game.

Here are the North American Release dates for Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy:
Dragon Warrior (NFC/NES; 1989)
Final Fantasy (NFC/NES; 1990)
Dragon Warrior II (NFC/NES; 1990)
Final Fantasy II (SFC/SNES; 1991. Final Fantasy IV in Japan)
Dragon Warrior III (NFC/NES; 1991)
Dragon Warrior IV (NFC/NES; 1992)
Final Fantasy III (SFC/SNES; 1994. Final Fantasy VI in Japan)
Final Fantasy VII (PSX; 1997)
Final Fantasy VIII (PSX; 1999)
Final Fantasy IX (PSX; 2000)
Final Fantasy X (PS2; 2001)
Dragon Warrior VII (PSX; 2001)
Dragon Warrior I and Final Fantasy I were released at about the same time in America, so fans were split between the two.
Final Fantasy II (FFIV) was released at the same time as Dragon Warrior III. The SNES has better graphics and sound than the NES. It also has "active" combat which makes battles more dangerous. These additions made Final Fantasy more appealing to the American market.
If Dragon Warrior V and VI were released for the SNES in North America, the Dragon Quest series would be more popular. Final Fantasy would still be at an advantage, but it would not be as significant.
Dragon Warrior VII received a very small release in America, and it was for the PlayStation, rather than the PlayStation 2. This made many people avoid it. Dragon Quest VIII might do better; we'll see.
Well I said it a long while ago, but just now spotted an advertisement for the latest DQ game. Maybe people do listen...

For confirmation I must say.
If you(>all of them who look forward to DQ8) think that DQ8 has high freedom RPG , It's false.
DQ8 actually make much of story RPG(like FF).
Do you know it?

Because most American's don't play RPGs. It's too much an intellectual investment for them, and most of them don't see games as something you play for a very long time or have to think much about.
I, on the other hand, love Dragon Quest. My favorite being DQ V
This is news to me seeing as the only type of games I tend to play are RPGs because of the length of time to play and storyline. Perhaps you are terribly confused as to how many Americans play RPGs.

Whipping a dead horse here but DQ8 did well in North America. It didn't do great though. It hasn't been out a full year and my local EB Games no longer carry it. Occasionally I'll still find it in a Walmart or Zellers games section though.
It's initial sales were high but quickly fell.
I personally felt DQ8 was a breath of fresh air. It's been a long time since I played a jRPG that I didn't feel like I was forcing myself to pick up the controller every time I went to play it. Infact, it was the first game in a very long time that I wanted to go home and play when I was out of the house.
On the topic, it all comes down to advertising. DQ was not advertised here like FF was. This was mentioned before though. DQ8 was advertised fairly well which is why it did good.
Actually, the jRPG genre is beginning to look exciting again. FF3DS, Valyrie Profile 2, FF12.. will be interesting in any case.

DQ7 had inane advertising in the US. "This island is..." end.
