Name: Anonymous 2005-09-15 23:33

for those who have seen it... what do u think?
me? im scared outta my pants... i think it has potential, but i dont see how i will be playing smash brothers on that... somewhat worried but then again, it just might work... in one word, intriguing... (info available on most videogame sites)

From what i heard, the remote can fit into specially designed game controller shells (N64 and gamecube maybe) and for 3rd party developers, your gamecube controller plugs right into the top of the console.

I don't see how it is an advantage over the old controller styles. Games rely on the d-pad/analog stick and lots of buttons.

>From what i heard, the remote can fit into specially designed game controller shells
And the gyro position/movement detection still works when using the shell, to boot.

How many buttons do most games actually use at once? Your average platformer might need buttons for attack/jump/crouch/special and a stick to move. If you can control movement by the position of the controller, the stick can be dropped. The video at IGN showed a girl making mario jump by flicking the controller up. That's one less button. If you could tilt the controller /down/ to crouch/crawl, that's two less buttons.

In a flying game, you could turn the controller sideways and use it as a yoke. Then you still have two buttons on the right, a trigger in back, and 4 "buttons" on the d-pad.

In Ocarina of time, you had about half a dozen stick/button combos for all the sword attacks. With this, you can simply /swing/ the sword.

Has anyone else realized that with the analog stick add-on, it's just like an N64 controller?

Name: Anonymous 2005-09-16 21:46

I had a Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad that had a bit of this, but in full gamepad form.  Tilt left/right/forward/backward and it would sense the amount of tilt and in what direction.  I really didn't like it because it was hard to finely control how much in one direction you want to go.

#1 Reason this sucks:

-YOU GET TIRED

Name: Anonymous 2005-09-17 4:27

You do not get tired. It's quite sensitive and the people who have tried it have said that you don't really have to wave it around at all. Keeping it in your lap, supporting it and making slight movements is enough.

For the record, I love the controller and feel that Nintendo are really justified in calling this a revolution. As for the buttons, less can sometimes be more. Pressing seven or eight buttons at once during MGS3 was just...horrible.

Carpal tunnel syndrome then?

Name: Anonymous 2005-09-17 12:02

I think it's shit.  My two favorite genres are fighting games and complex action games and you can't do either on this controller.

The controller looks customized for aiming games (FPS), and stupid gimmick games.

If you connect the other half, or turn the controller sideways, it behaves just like a normal controller.

Heeh, none of the next-gen controllers are good for fighting games, though. You want an arcade style joystick for that.

I like DC controller for my fighters

yeah, for fighting games, any current controller is a non-issue anyway, because 4 face buttons only does the job for Neo games.

wow that's a terrible fucking idea. nintendo for the megafail.
ACCHOOOO OH NO NOW IM FLYING OFF THE CLIFF AT 800 MPH!!!!

Name: Anonymous 2005-09-18 17:38

is using movements instead of d-pad/buttons really an advantage? The same thing gets accomplished, but now we have to use a remote control and always point it at the screen instead of comfortably sittin in our lap.

Name: Anonymous 2005-09-18 23:42

always point it at the screen

No, you don't.

Pretty interesting interview. Miyamoto says he's always thought that games would eventually break free of the confines of a TV Screen and fill the entire room.

One may think he's a little too ahead from this time, or he's finally got nuts, since this statement sounds too philosophical compared too Kutaragi and Allard's techie/teraflops war. But to me, his idea of 'being' the main character rather than 'controlling' the main character seems like one of the goals yet to be achived in videogame. Thinking like the main hero/character, feeling like the main character.

Still, I think that even if his visions turn into reality someday, there'll be always gaming like we know today, with buttons, a monitor screen and such, because there'll be always people that will only like gaming like this (afraid of experimenting new things or not, I'm not being THAT critic).

(oh, 3AM and I'm not sure if this makes sense)

Try playing Star Control with that sort of shit, that's right, you can't, and that's why the old ways will never die out.
Ultima would be fun with that interface though. :V

Name: Anonymous 2005-11-06 5:44

Miyamoto is a nutjob. Why is still in the gaming business.

Name: Anonymous 2005-11-10 18:34

Revo controller has potential. With controller shells, you could play games with a controller layout and with the added gyro/motion sensor functions. The standalone controller provides for more than enough ingenuity by itself, but Nintendo's watching out for the critics that complain about the drastic changes by accomodating with said shells. I like where >>20 was going, Nintendo's not changing gaming, he's just adding to it.

has anyone else realized that nothing this weird has ever worked. Its like hollyweird on stearoids, thiese stuipid japanise buisnessmen and reasearchers.

Name: ALttP 2005-11-17 1:49

Yes, the DS never worked.

...Oh, wait, you tard, that worked perfectly. That's egg on my face!

For one, there is a casing that allows for more conventional games.

And to the person who asked why Miyamoto is still in the business...

I guess it's silly to assume that THE most successful figure in gaming, EVER, and creating some of the greatest video games franchises ever is... well, a great business man and developer.

And did it ever occur to you Anon dickheads that Miyamoto is not the fucking president of Nintend of America, and is only in charge of the games that his superiors ASSIGN to him?! Regardless, you must have been the exact same people who complained that the DS would be a bunch of gimmicks. Ever consider how great Meteos would be without the touch screen? It'd be terrible. Same with Nintendogs, Kirby: Canvas Curse and Feel the Magic: XY/XX. The DS is the most innovative game system I've seen in the past two generations, and this next generation will trump the DS with the Revolution.

Go outside more.

Name: Anonymous 2005-11-19 12:31

So this rectangular block turned sideways is supposed to feel just like the classic NES or SNES controller.  Right.

Name: ALttP 2005-11-19 18:13

>>26
Of course.

Name: Anonymous 2005-11-20 3:47

The Revolution looks more like a novelty than anything else, and it doesn't even support HD. Right now I don't have any standard-def TV's in my house, so that's cause for concern. The controller? Can't see myself waving it around for more than 5-10 minutes. I think a lot of Nintendo supporters give the company way too much credit. Miyamoto couldn't create a successful NEW franchise if his life depended on it. It's spinoff after spinoff with this company!

Would you rather play a simplistic lightgun/EyeToy style game with my little nephew or go on Xbox Live and play against some of the greatest gamers in the world, download a bunch of cool stuff for my games, and chat with all my friends? Yeah, I think I'm going to choose the latter.

Name: Anonymous 2005-11-20 4:32

One of the biggest problems I see with peoples perception of this new controller is they are thinking about how it will work on current game styles. A new control method can potentially spawn a new game style suited to that controller. Another complaint I often hear is that it a novelty not suitable for serious gaming. As a nintendo fanboy I'd like to make a counter argument to this but I'm not in a position to because from my perspective all consoles are novelty gaming devices, PC's are where the real gaming is at as far as I'm concerned.

Name: Nova 2005-11-21 8:49

Personally, I'm thinking that Joe Public will see this controller, and once again think "FTW" about Nintendo's ideas. They can't see something original. Oh well, let them have their PlayStation I say.

Name: ALttP 2005-11-25 14:20

...-_-

Pikmin
Nintendogs
Legend of Starfi
Brain Training
Trace Memory
Polarium

And, there's plenty more where that came from. And, of course, Nintendo is the only company to ever survive on its successes.

Nintendo owns like 10% of the market now... but are the only ones making a profit?

Name: Vinz 2005-11-27 0:17

Needs a complete design overhaul. Good idea past that. I just can't stand how ugly it looks. Fuckin' remote man...Great idea Nintendo, make it look like something everyone familiar with cable TV HATES.
